That's what's churning through the College Dem rumor mill here in Athens. It would be so fracking poetic! (If you'll pardon me the vulgarity.)

Re: Blogger Bob: “There is more to security than simply going through a checkpoint”

John, you say, "TSA has argued that they are inspecting using the most reasonable means to prevent weapons and contraband from entering the secured area of an airport." But the experiences LeeAnn described above are not "reasonable" by any reasonable definition of the word, and they are distressingly common.

I'm sure cavity searches would make us even safer! Would they be considered reasonable, too? Does the end justify any means?

As Lisa said, the SCOTUS has gutted the Fourth Amendment, but that doesn't mean we should acquiesce to the loss of basic liberties and the demise of common sense.

Re: TSA baby pat-down photographer: “I’ve never seen anything quite that bad”

You could easily fit 3 + oz. of gel in a diaper! My kids did just that, many a time. (Love your idea, Jeanne!)

Re: On the internet, everyone knows you're a pinko, leftie feminist.

This is why I'm pseudonymous. Anyone interested could quite easily figure out my real-life identity. But this way, my blog doesn't pop up when someone googles my real name. That allows for considerably more freedom. Many of my friends and collegues know about my blog, and a few of them read it. My parents don't know about it, because I'd feel compelled to censor myself if I thought they were reading it.

Re: Lars and the Real Pillow

Just to clarify why I used the word "icky" - I'm referring to the underage aspect of the characters, which, as Trixie pointed out at the The American Virgin, has child-porn connotations. The NYT article mentions that one of the characters depicted on the pillows is 10 years old. I don't care if it's fantasy, this creeps me out.

Re: Lars and the Real Pillow

Awesome choice of photo, Rachel.

This story keeps striking me as more sad than icky. I mean, it's icky, too, but I really appreciated your comments on the loneliness underlying love relationships with pillows. Also, those stats on virginity in Japan just blew my mind.

Re: LOLOLOL—gasp!—LOLOLOL!

My husband teaches journalism - including media ethics. This just made his head explode.

Re: Friends with book deals: the reviewer's conundrum

I'm in academia and have reviewed a couple of books in my field. I've never been asked to review a close friend's book (and I would likely say no to that) but I've got at least a passing acquaintance with quite a few of my colleagues. It's not expected that the reviewer and the author be strangers to each other.

But if I thought a book was really awful, I'd probably decline to review it, just as I would decline to write a letter of reference for a student I couldn't recommend.
