Generally, because privileged white guys tend to be the most smirky about the "fun" they're having, which is not actually funny in the least, as they've never experienced anything like racism, misogyny, or homophobia themselves (what with being higher on the pecking order and all.)

The behaviour isn't reserved solely to them, but this kind of smug obliviousness - as displayed here with obnoxious aplomb - is more prevalent amongst white dudes. YMMV, of course.

Actually, I'm quite charming. Most of the comments made were never about me, directly; the braintrusts uttering them were so wrapped up in the hatred of half the population that they assumed that I, too, must hate women! Hating women is as natural as breathing! Hating women is life! Hating on other women will surely get you laid with the woman you're actually speaking to! I dated an engineer all through university. I work in the engineering department of a major university. I understand the culture that produces this kind of "humour"; I just think it's pathetic and not nearly as hilarious as you all think it is.

To draw a parallel for you, I wouldn't walk into a bar in a predominantly African-American neighbourhood with a bunch of my white friends and start "ironically" insulting them with racial slurs. I wouldn't giggle at how they all must have eaten fried chicken for dinner, and had watermelon for dessert, and jocularly insinuate that they must be stayin' out late that night because they're likely not employed or anything, and then snort with my friends about how those "bees" just get so upset when you poke their nest! Because I am not an asshole.

Yeah, nice try, nitwit. Bigotry requires hating someone for what they are, not who they are. I do not hate all white males. I know a number of white males who are perfectly admirable people - though even they trip over the pitfalls of privilege from time to time. What I said was that white males tend to engage in "ironic" bigotry for fun, because they've never experienced true bigotry themselves. I never said I hated all white males. I only hate those white males so ensconced and smug in their privilege that they do not recognize - either through ignorance or willful blindness - how offensive and repulsive their behaviour is.

I hate them for how they act, and how they treat people and how they refuse to act like decent, respectful human beings. That is not bigotry. To pretend it is demeans the very definition OF bigotry, which you claim to be so adamantly opposed to.

Also? If you're trying to "fix the system"? I suggest not advocating on behalf of those telling women to shut up and make them a sandwich, or those offering to cure us of all our grievances with a "good deep dicking." It makes you look a fool - or more likely, dishonest.

Is there anywhere to go that I can go to read about how this system works? Like, sometimes I'll click something that takes me to a different formatted page (Disqus-based), where I can rate people's comments and reply to every comment (whereas on the blogspot page, the 'reply" button doesn't appear after all comments?), and click on stuff to follow people, and all sorts of things - but I don't know how I got there, honestly. Is there a Disqus-for-Dummies link?

they are representative of a certain variety of, to use the term extremely loosely, "humorist" who is overwhelmingly predictable as being a white male, that i had the misfortune to meet again and again in college. they are frequently the smokers of mediocre cigars and collectors of empty beer and liquor bottles, enjoy showing up at social functions in a bathrobe, and like to pee in the yard in broad daylight. these not-so-gentlemen are deeply amused by their own jokes, which are generally cast with the intent to be as offensive as humanly possible.

This reminds me of an argument I had with a guy at a bar recently, who first denied that catcalling happened at all, then denied it's frequency, then denied my reality that I needed to be "on-guard" and wary at all times: "You can't let your fear rule you!" Uh, thanks, 6 foot-tall male person, for your enlightening view on the situation.

That very night, as we walked home through a transit strike, a bunch of drunk 20-somethings shouted at me. I jerked a thumb in their direction, all "See what I mean?" And the guy still was all, "That's just because you're with us, and because the guys aren't alone." And I was like, "No, if you guys weren't here, they likely would have started following me." There are no limits to willful blindness, I tell ya.
