The information that man gave which caused all of those deaths came from Poe's mouth, because he was not listening to Holdo. "Why didn't she just tell him the plan?" The instant he found out even part of the plan, he immediately blabbed it over a comm to his friends... and then only after he'd revealed it, where DJ could hear, did he even ask if they'd picked up the codebreaker. He didn't even bother to ask if they were alone. With the exception of the Luke and the people in the hangar and on the bridge when the TIE fighters attacked the ship, every single death in this film was as a result of Poe not listening to his commanding officers. And I say that as someone who adores Poe.

Re: The Treatment of POC & Women in The Last Jedi

That's not what fridging means. Fridging is when a female character is killed off specifically to give a male character something to angst about. Her death served a purpose to begin with, long before we knew she was Rose's sister.

Re: The Treatment of POC & Women in The Last Jedi

So here's my thing. On my first viewing of The Force Awakens, I loved Kylo as a character. He was rash, he was unstable, he was full of impotent rage. Abrams knew that Palpatine and Vader were characters that had essentially been deified in public consciousness, with Vader being named the #3 greatest villain of all time by AFI. As of 2017, Vader has enjoyed 40 years of being one of the top scariest bad guys in fiction. No one can hope to top that or equal it, so Abrams knew better than to even try. So what he did was he made Kylo Ren a villain who is desperate to reach that level of infamy, who is deeply ineffective as a villain. Vader was detached and cold and even when he had outbursts of anger it manifested as quiet and terrifying. He commanded respect and was intimidating as hell.

Kylo isn't any of those things. He's dangerous, but he has no control over himself. He throws violent tantrums and he wears his mask with his voice changer as a way to emulate Vader's imposing presence, he's childish and immature and as badly as he wants to be feared and respected, he always falls short. Even when Kylo took over as Supreme Leader, he was not respected or feared, as evidenced on Crait.

So I really think Kylo is a very interesting character, I do. I think he's a smart move on Abrams's part, I think he's well-acted by Driver, and I think he's effective at being the sort of villain that he is, which is not the kind of villain we typically see. He's a villain who is not good at what he wants to be good at, but who is dangerous and powerful nonetheless.

Here's why I hate on him.

I hate him because, while he's not the sort of intimidating villain that is usually featured in Star Wars, he is identical to real-life villains. Specifically, privileged men who destroy things in anger. He's an entitled, reckless, immature child. He is essentially a trust fund baby who grew up to be the Star Wars equivalent of a school shooter. He kills his own father not because he hated him, but because Han was 'the past' and Kylo wanted to be rid of his past. He leers at Rey while she is restrained and immobilized, "I can take whatever I want," and he then proceeds to violate her, though not physically. He is manipulative in a way that is all too familiar — "You have no place in this story; you're nobody. But not to me." The stormtroopers and First Order officers avoid him when he's angry, but they also indulge him to avoid his wrath.

But here's the real kicker: The instant that the credits began to roll on The Force Awakens, the internet was full of people defending him and condemning his victims. They justified everything, blamed Han for his own death, blamed both Han and Leia for his turn to the Dark side, insisted he was a misguided young man who needed help. What's worse, they swore that it was up to Rey to redeem and save him and bring him back to the light. It's apparently up to Rey, his victim, the woman he manipulated and violated, whose father figure he had just murdered, to fix him. Worse still, they want a love story between the two. I have watched abusers be defended and their victims be blamed and ridiculed and dismissed. I have felt the pressure to change my abuser and fix him and redeem him. I've not only known several Kylo Rens in my personal life, but I have seen them on the news. I have seen the articles discussing how troubled and sad and lonely these men are, defending them and deflecting the blame for their actions and doing great disservice to their victims.

THAT'S why I hate Kylo Ren. Because he is every white male abuser, predator, or murderer that exists in reality, and the audience babies him the same way that society babies his real-life counterparts.

Re: 5 Ways That Steve Trevor Could Return to Wonder Woman Sequels That Would Hurt Me the Most, Ranked

...I certainly hope not, because that's Antiope's sister's name.

Re: Wynonna Earp Recap: “House of Memories”

I bet you're feeling mighty foolish right now.

Re: Eisner Nominee Renae De Liz Shares Short Guide for Artists on How to De-Objectify Female Characters

There is a serious difference here. The misunderstanding comes from the idea that these characters are done the same way for both genders, but they're not. Men have this power fantasy, whereas women are objects of sexual titillation.
