I agree its sad... but its the product of cutting federal/state funding for cops/firefighters/state employees across the country. almost every city that has budget problems (which is just about EVERY city) is having these issues. Ever notice how gay bashing also goes up when the economy crashes? it isn't just because bigots are frustrated and feel the need to take it out on someone (though that's part of it)... there's no police presence to keep them from attempting it anymore.

how can any of the anti-gay groups seriously believe being gay is a choice? who would 'choose' to be gay in Iran, or Uganda? or Utah for that matter? the argument just falls flat... the answer is, NOBODY would 'choose' a life of ridicule or being an outcast, or possibly death in some countries.

She knows the history, but it would be embarassing to her to point out that low point in our nation's history. and completely counter to her 'we need to return to where we were' view when talking about the founding fathers... so she does what the GOP does best, revisionist history.

As for everyone being free? michele, try marrying another woman... yeah, we're all equal here except when it comes to taxes, inheritance, and about 1100 other Federal laws. how often are her neighbors beat over the head with a hammer while walking their dog in their own neighborhood?

Intolerance breeds intolerance... and the GOP needs intolerance and fear in order to exist. God knows it isn't their failed 'trickle-down' economic policy (that for some reason grants them the title 'fiscally conservative'). Tip number one on economics, if you help the people do well... EVERYONE does well. Tip number two, trickle-down economics has NEVER worked. Tip number three, promising budget cuts without raising taxes only drives the middle and lower class into poverty and widens the income gap. Tip number four, the GOP loves wealthy corporations... add it up, how do any republican policies help the majority of America? Answer, they don't.

If michele is all for returning to the America of the founding fathers... I hope she's willing to sign everything she owns over to her husband, quit her job and give up her right to vote. All of those rights weren't part of the Constitution either.

while I agree with the article... and I'm not pro or anti-gun... I'd just like to point out that it IS illegal to buy a fully-automatic weapon in the USA, and has been since 1986 (ironically, Reagan signed the ban into law).

that said, once you've bought a semi-auto weapon... I'm sure there are ways to modify it to fully automatic. Gang members aren't exactly concerned about the legality of doing that I'd guess.

MY problem with the NRA lobbyists getting involved... NOBODY needs any weapon with a 30 clip (or larger). You don't use it for hunting, you don't use it for personal protection... you use it for military situations ONLY.

which leads me to the one question nobody seems to be asking about the Arizona shootings... what was the clerk thinking when they sold someone 2 (or more) 30 shot clips? buying two (or more) implies that you're thinking you're going to run out of ammo and need to reload very quickly. That didn't set off any bells and whistles?!?

They tried unsuccessfully to ban large capacity clips years ago... but thanks to the NRA and its lobbyists, you can still get them.

I completely understand owning guns for hunting or home protection... but in either case, owning multiple large capacity magazines fails the rationality test.

If airline passengers can all be treated as potential terrorists and go through security screening to fly from place to place... I think there should be some sort of Federal training/certification for anyone selling guns everywhere. Just because you work at WalMart you shouldn't be in charge of selling something with the purpose of killing... whether hunting or protecting yourself, if you pull the trigger your purpose is to kill. A teenager at a sporting goods store can't sell you grenades, and there's a good reason for that.

umm... if you're making a case for anti-bullying laws, isn't that what you're doing? whether gay or straight, you're using them for a political agenda.

so essentially, the editorial is saying "don't use them for an agenda that I'VE decided is POLITICALLY MOTIVATED". read that as "the gay agenda".

what an asshole. bullying should be stopped PERIOD... but it almost sounds like he'd want anything with 'sexual preference/identity' stripped from any anti-bullying legislation.

He'd still use the dead kids as poster children for the legislation, just wouldn't mention they're gay.

there are approximately 1400 Federal rights that LGBT couples are not eligible for... there is absolutely NO Federal recognition of our relationships.

so, just a few examples... we pay more in federal taxes (shared healthcare is considered 'income' by the government)... we can't allow our partners to immigrate to live with us... we can't collect on our partner's social security benefits in the event of their death... we have to stay in the closet in order to serve our country in the armed forces... generally, we're considered 2nd class citizens by our country.

as for me? I've never been molested, my parents are average somewhat normal people (although, I always thought my dad was a bit of a redneck... can't apologise to him enough for that mis-characterization of him), I grew up Catholic and went to regular school (non-church related)... and I never even knew what 'gay' meant until one of my sister's friends explained it to my sister one day when I was within earshot... and at that very moment, when I was 12!!!, I remember thinking "there are other people who feel like I do?"

no one taught me I was gay. no one pushed any agenda on me.... and I stayed in the closet until I was 24! I was 26 before I came out to anyone in my family... and 30 before I came out to my father, after having moved 3000 miles from home and still worrying he'd reject me.

All those years I knew I was gay and not ONCE do I remember my parents making a gay joke or anyone in my family using the word faggot, yet I never told anyone... friends and peers making gay jokes or talking about fags with disgust? yes... hearing the word homosexual equated with something disgusting (pedophiles?) by the media? yes.

Did my family keep me from telling them something I knew about myself before puberty? no... did society? yes!

it isn't a choice... your punishing kids for who they are by convincing them they're immoral IS a choice.

so think about this... all these kids who kill themselves because they're gay and bullied for it... did you raise the bully? and are you proud of your kid? think about it for a long time... more of us die every day because you refuse to believe God made us the way we are.
