You can store the catalog anywhere you like. You can even move it from one hard drive to another with no issue, as long as the photos stay in the same directory. The reason for storing your catalog on the internal hard drive is that it allows you to work on your photos even when your external hard drive is disconnected - as long as you are using Smart Previews.

Check out this video for more info on Smart Previews: https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Re: Lightning photos, the easy way.

Cool shot!

Re: Spontaneous World

I'm single.

Re: Post Production Workflow Part 1

We're in the middle of updating the site. It works in most scenarios with soft even light. Here's a video I made about metering modes: http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Re: VIDEO SEMINAR: Taking the Mysteries Out of Metering with Mark Wallace

Hi Julio,

Unfortunately the 5D Mark II only allows you to set 1/3 or 1/2 stop increments. But there's good news, each "click" of the dial is 1/3 (or 1/2) stop. So to increase by a full stop just "click" the dial 3 times (for 1/3 stops) or twice (for 1/2 stop) and you'll get a full stop.

I hope that helps.

-Mark

Re: Depth of Field

Here's a great article (with lots of math) explaining more about DOF and sensor size. http://www.clarkvision.com/...

Does sensor size control DOF? No. But it still has a large influence on it and should be considered. You'll always be able to get shallower DOF with a larger sensor. We both agree on that. Why that's true is something we can discuss. :)

Re: Depth of Field

Exactly right. If you shoot 160mm@f/4 the DOF will much shallower than 100mm@f/8. The sensor isn't causing this, it's the focal length and the aperture. But if you shot the full frame and the APS-C camera with the same settings the DOF will be the same.

Since a smaller sensor has a crop factor (you see much less in the frame) you'd need a wider angle lens (like the 100mm you mentioned) or you'd need to get farther from the subject.

The sensor isn't changing the DOF but it's changing the way you shoot (shorter lens, greater distance from subject) and that is what changes the DOF.

Re: Mark Wallace US Meetup Tour

I totally agree. That's why we're doing this. I actually hosted the first meetup three weeks ago. We had such a great response that we knew we had to do it again. This *is* the second session. Don't worry, I'm in New York all the time and I host meetups as often as possible (I think this is the fifth on NYthis year). I'm also working very hard to make it possible for everyone on the waitlist to attend this event. :)

Re: Vote for your city!

Send me more info! He also helped move equipment and mic stands. We shot the entire video in about 5 hours and had to really be nimble. On this shoot I didn't have an "official" assistant but working with Ab is always a treat. He has no ego and has no issue doing some lifting while he's producing. http://www.absesay.com/

Note: the reason Ab isn't in any of these photos is because he's the guy who took the pictures.

Re: Vote for your city!

DC was nominated and is now on the list. :) Vote, vote, vote.

Re: Vote for your city!

Um, you're shift key is stuck... :)

Re: Vote for your city!

That would be amazing! I shot in aperture priority mode and used exposure compensation (-2 stops) to control the background.

You can also use manual mode on the camera (leave the flashes on ETTL) and then just underexpose the background a bit. The flashes will automatically throw the proper amount of light on your subject.

Give it a shot and let me know how it goes!

Re: On Location with PocketWizard

Yes, that's correct.
