Underage children should not be drinking, agreed.
The Social Host Ordinance would only effect 18, 19 and 20 year olds that are served alcohol by their parent or guardian. California Code, Section 25658.2 states that persons age 18 or higher may consume alcohol on private property when it is served to them by their parent or guardian. This ordinance would could make that illegal and add more penalties.
Councilman Victor Gomez states himself in the article, "I noticed that a lot of the areas with social host ordinances have colleges or universities nearby so it pinpointed areas that have a high amount of alcohol consumption."
Have we pinpointed these areas here? It all seems like a none issue to me.
Just remember, the thicker the rule book gets, the less freedom we all have, well intentioned or not.

California Code, Section 25658.2 states that persons age 18 or higher may consume alcohol on private property when it is served to them by their parent or guardian. When I said minor, I was referring to 18 to 20 year olds not old enough to purchase alcohol.

Pressing issues: Keeping the Library and Parks open, road improvement and repair, gangs, generating revenue into San Benito County, creating activities for teens. The last time I checked, our little town wasn't growing hand over fist. We are loosing businesses and the housing market is flooded with homes that won't sell.

Hi Robert, I have read up on Social Host Ordinances and they were created FOR alcohol. The ordinance is used in areas where underage parties, such as "frat parties" are a problem because law enforcement has inadequate enforcement authority to respond to underage drinking on private property.

I guess I failed to make my point clear. I think parents/adults supplying alcohol to minors is wrong. Councilman Victor Gomez thinks it is wrong. You think it's wrong. Good for us. Do we need another law or more penalties? As you stated: "but the question is how to enforce the laws that we already have? " If we are having problems enforcing the laws we have, what differance will one more make? I just think our efforts are better served addressing more pressing issues.

I don't intent to sound negative, but how many laws and penalties for the same crimes are needed? How is this "GREAT for our rural community"? How big an issue do we have with parents supplying alcohol to their minor children? Our community has limited resources and we need for put our efforts into more pressing concerns such as generating revenue for the county and fighting gang violence. The inforcement of the laws we already have is the key.

Hey Cupcake,
When you turn off Sunnyslope Rd. on to Memorial Drive in front of Sunnyslope school, the speed limit is 40 mph. (without children present) Turning off of Meridian on to Memorial, the speed limit is still 40 mph right in front of homes.
Driving on Hwy 25 along row crop and it's 35 mph. This is too slow. It should be at least 45 mph.

You're right, the bottom has fallen out of the housing market. Those that haven't lost thier homes are struggling to keep thiers. Fuel and food prices are up. Just about every business in town has had to cut back employees and cut wages. Everyone deserves raises, but where will we get the money? More taxes just increase the burden of the tax payers that don't have the money. Be thankful for the work and wages you are getting.
