You can start collecting them later on in the game after you finish the 7th mission. They are purple orbs that look like the landmark ones.

Yeah the map does suck. I'm working on recreating it with all of the locations and in the correct spots too. Gamestop fails once again.

Some of the ones I found were right next to the landmarks. They really didn't give much explanation on the map as to what exactly they were. Every time I found a purple one though it counted towards one of the 50 hints.
