The hardline Indian family has always been the stuff of folklore in my experience, but the truth of it seems even sadder and oppressive than I could have imagined. To be fair, I'm as mixed as you can get - Kashmiri Brahmin/Maratha/Bengali/Anglo-Indian, and every one of my parents siblings married people from different communities, typically different countries in fact, so there was no room for 'prejudice.'

Re: http://andrewromano.tumblr.com/post/812284160

- The Caravalet Museum in the Marais is a must. A collection of ancient Parisian artifacts, tracing the history of the city from its origins as the Parisii village Lutèce to modern day Paris. Notable items include canoes from Caesar's time, Marie Antoinette's personal effects and a reconstruction of the room Proust stayed in whilst writing "In Search of Lost Time."

- The APC surplus in Montmartre is a nice place to find "recent vintage" pieces at more than affordable prices.

- Cheri Bibi in Montmartre, located on the same street as the APC surplus, is a fantastic, inexpensive restaurant. It's hard to give it a ringing endorsement unless you've been, which you should if you're in the area. It's the best place for dinner in the 18th.

- Chez Georges in the Latin Quarter is a great bar with the feel of a rustic tavern. Very popular, but has this charming, literary quality to it. The wine pours all night and it attracts all kinds of people.

Re: Vignesh Ram

American Apparel actually precedes these three. If anything, it's plausible that AA beget them.

Re: Vignesh Ram

I'm not going to pretend I have a definitive stance on this issue but I do think that despite a bailout, a change across the board must be implemented.

We pay people $80 an hour to do what our competitors pay $45 an hour for. Nothing against the unions but the compensation American auto workers are receiving is ridiculous.

I also feel that it's pretty hard at this point to pit GM against Ford on the basis of selective technology. Given time, it's not unrealistic to imagine that GM could come up with something comparable if not better than Ford's current fuel efficient line. As for the comment about GM having 'zero intent to press forward with an efficient fleet', I'd point to the GM sponsored http://www.challengex.org/ project that actually gives money to grad students to design an innovative, sustainable, fuel efficient automobile. From what I understand this was entirely Rick Wagoner's idea, something to think about the next time he faces the chopping block.

My biggest problem with all of this has less to do with the manufacturers and more to do with the American consumer. Despite a fairly large and impressive hybrid line, the majority of Americans still have little to no interest in ditching their current gas guzzler. What needs to be done is the discontinuation of gas and oil subsidies and a raise on price tax. We need to make it fucking impossible for a soccer mom to drive a Suburban. Offer huge subsidies to those who drive 40+ mpg cars and pay for those subsidies by jacking up the gas tax. All one has to do is look at the situation in Europe, where gas prices are somewhere above 6$ and the main market is 3-4 cyl turbo diesels with 40-50 MPG.

Re: ACBD

So good.
