I graduated VHS in 1998 and I can tell you that this kind of stuff was happening then, as it probably was for years before. It wasn't always so publicly so it wasn't always so noticed - as even said of this instance, they weren't always noticeable "at least to an outside observer". But I watched a classmate endure false kindness that was clearly meant to take advantage of her. I felt the attempts to lure me into emotionally vulnerable positions. It was quiet. In those days, it was more under the radar than it is now. But it was there. And it was damaging. And it took Jesus to heal and change some of those hurt places in me and allow me to forgive. Denying the quiet presence of teasing and under-the-radar bullying de-legitimizes what many of us endured in the past, allows kids living present hurt to endure what this student has had to endure, and ensures that students in the future will continue to face this kind of pain as well.

Re: Hydroplanes, with a twist

Ever since I moved away from Vashon, the Fourth of July has just never been the same to me without that early morning sound (not to mention late evening practices) of the hydros. I grew up with that - it was just normal. But now, though I have much to celebrate (including my son's birthday), I do wonder if the holiday will ever have that same sense of fun and anticipation. I know there are always some that find it obnoxious. But I, for one, miss it.

Re: Prop. 1 trailing in early election returns, while Prop. 2 appears to have failed - Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber

Sometimes $10 more is $10 that just isn't there. For many, investing in children is starting at home - by putting food on the table, clothes on the kids, etc. If someone doesn't have the money for more, they just don't have it. I'm sure there are people out there who could afford it and chose not to, for good reasons or bad reasons. But don't condemn those who CAN'T along with them. Yes, the lack of funds negatively affects the kids. However, for many, investing in children is starting at home - by putting food on the table, clothes on the kids, etc. It just could be that pushing this funding through could negatively affect many kids as well - the needs of these families should not be ignored.

Re: For Vashon Sand & Gravel, the deal means it can keep operating - Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber

Congratulations Vashon Sand & Gravel! You've earned it! Its finally over with a result that all can accept. Through it all, you kept people employed and working to the best of your ability. It wasn't fair that Sand and Gravel and its employees were personally criticized. Despite being the ones having to endure such resentment, you really are an asset to the community - maybe more than the community deserves.

Re: Editorial: District’s new lunch program is a bold and welcome move - Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber

Sure beats the cold sack lunches, with sandwiches that were better left unnamed, that they tried on us back when I was in 6th grade! Sometimes changes need to happen. What bothers me is wanting change because we are too selfish to want the bother of something (like noise) on us. No one else wants it either. Thank you for standing up even at risk to yourself! If the man told to leave was innocent, I am sorry - I hope that he understands (or will come to understand) that the choice was made simply to protect children from any potential harm. As for the Park board, they may have done what they had to do. But the question is what will they do about it now? Will they post a set of codes in a timely manner (before the pool is closed for the season) or will force other lifeguards to potentially have to choose between themselves and children? Please, park commissioners, this should be no-brainer!

Re: Letter to the editor: Fourth of July fireworks show contradicts the Island’s values - Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber

In regards to animals:
I was talking to someone in my town recently about fireworks and pets. For our pets, it seemed that the local, neighborhood firecrackers going off throughout the day and night before, during and after July 4th were a bigger problem that the town firework show. At least the town display is predictable and short. But sometimes its the individual people that are worse.
That being said, I think we, our pets and our wildlife can put up a short celebration - difficult as it may be on some. We need to be considerate of others, most certainly. But not one of us has our life so perfectly put together that there is no one that would disagree with, and maybe even find hurtful in some way, something we do.
Meanwhile, we have much to celebrate in this country!

Re: Terrier shot after killing a chicken - Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber

"sad that laws like this exist"
Try saying that if its your animals that get attacked on your property. But the funny thing is that I miss them. I was outside one evening a couple nights ago, suddenly realizing that if I were on Vashon, I would be listening to the hydros practing right then. I grew up with that sound - practices in the quiet of the evening and the real thing early on the morning of July Fourth. For me, that's a large part of what made summer summer. Ten years and 300-some miles away, sometimes I still find myself listening for that sound, a sound that always brings happy memories of childhood and home.

Re: Letter to the editor: Banning grinding has sent teens to other events (June 2, 2010) - Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber

Good point - regardless of whether you are for or against grinding. Who's raising the kids - the school or the parents? The answer should, of course, be yes to both. But, its ultimately parents who should have the final say. My parents made decisions for us as kids - sometimes in agreement with the school and sometimes in opposition to the school. My parents gave us choices and fun - but they also gave us boundaries. My husband and I will also do this for our kids. That's what parents are for - to watch over, to teach and to protect their children, regardless of what is or isn't provided by the school system.

Re: Time&Again: First a library, a 1946 building houses senior center today - Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber

I still have a few memories of going to the this library when I was very young, probably only about 4 years old. I was blessed that my parents loved the outdoors and took time to teach us the ways of nature - wild plants and animals as well as domestic farm animals too. Its something I very much want to pass on to my own children. My son is only 10 months old, but we already are teaching him to be gentle with pets, to take part in feeding his grandparents farm animals, what dandelions and other plants are, and what bird makes the sound that he hears. Ten years ago in community college, my biology class was asked to stake out a plot of land and observe what happens on it over a period of time. For me, it wasn't particularly anything new - the land I chose was a alder wooded area on my grandparent's property and I had been observing natural life on it most of my life. But for other's my age, this was a new experience. I hope that for my son - and our other children yet to come - it will simply be a part of life. So much can be learned about this world and the One who created it from the natural things around us.

Re: Gravel mine shouldn’t be environmental priority - Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber

Thank you Beachcomber for running an article contrary to those you usually run. BOTH are important. Too often it is one or the other. I suppose I'm too used to thinking people want their way and only their way. But it cannot be. To protect one we must protect the other - and that goes in both directions. It irritates me when people have an attitude that says those who lost their jobs just don't count for anything, that saving a piece of land is more important. Sadly, that is the attitude from many that is portrayed, be it a true picture of what they are thinking or not - at least that's what it seems to me, having watched this fight for many years now. But you are right - BOTH things matter. This is what needs to be spoken.

Re: State lawmakers approve funds to buy out Glacier Northwest - Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber

cj409: I cannot argue that there may be some long-term issues as well. But that does not help those who are hurt NOW. And I know people who have been. I think BOTH issues should be addressed - not one at the expense of the other.

Mileta: Thank you - I suspect we have the same person in mind. Its good to know that others care.

I also agree that this whole mess was "started" with ulterior motives. Sadly, too many people got caught up in things they didn't fully understand.

I also have to be a bit suspicious about this whole "eel grass" argument. I was on that beach many times in 1999/2000. There IS eel grass. However, the eel grass bed is to the north, below the communities of gold beach, NOT below the glacier docks - at least as far as I could tell. Will it be affected? Maybe. But I'm not sure the affect would be as bad as it has been made out to be. Could I be wrong? Yes, of course. I'm not a biologist - just an interested observer. But I do have to wonder if this has been used as a political ploy and is not the problem that it has been publicized to be.

Bottom line is that I agree that there's a lot more going on here than has made the media. And I don't think its all about protecting the environment.

On a side note, I mentioned I had been on that beach. This is something Glacier should be commended for. For many years after the mine's original closure, this property had been used by the locals for blackberry picking, horseback riding, bike riding, walking, etc. A beautiful beach. A gorgeous view from "the Bluff" ( as my family used to refer to it.) This did not change after Glacier took ownership. I often rode my horse on this land, with the full knowledge of Glacier employees. I also know that others continued to enjoy it with Glacier employee acceptance. While it has been a few years since I last took horseback rides on Glacier property, it is my understanding that it was not until fairly recently that it was closed off to the public - AFTER tensions between activists and Glacier grew too hot. For me personally, I have to say thank you to Glacier for allowing your neighbors to enjoy a wonderful piece of land for as long as you did - you did not have too. To those who pushed hard enough to cause its closure, I am sorry - it did not have to be.
