My Personal Learning Journey from Conferences to Trainings

Thats kind of how conferences are meant to go as you mature in your field. At the start, you don't know anybody so the talks are an accessible way into the community. The more you build your tribe, the less value the talks become and the more it serves as merely a forcing function to get everyone into the same city and reconnect. For large enough conferences, over time, there emerge impromptu shadow conferences where participants don't even buy tickets for the main conference but still go to the city anyway just for the social connection.

Re: “Digital Estate Planning”/“The First Chang Dynasty”/“Introduction To Finality” | Community | TV Club | TV | The A.V. What the GF post is hoping for is that their read on the story matches the authorial intent because, if it doesn't, then it's a wasted investment in a series which is philosophically incongruent.

Re: Wolf Warrior 2 Movie Review & Film Summary (2017) | Roger Ebert

This is only the first action movie that normalizes an Asian man if you're entirely ignorant of all of Asian cinema.

Re: “The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show” gave us a totally outrageous paradigm

Whenever The AV Club isn't writing about The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show episode, everybody should be asking "Where's the article about The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show episode?"

Re: The Incredible Jessica James is a breezy hangout with your coolest friend

If I'm not mistaken, this is one of the few movies that does not pass the reverse Bechdel test. Mandy Moore's new husband (who is unnamed) has a conversation with Boone but the entire conversation is about Mandy Moore. An unnamed guy approaches David on the street and asks if he's OK but the conversation centers on Jessica. AFAICT, there aren't any other instances of two male characters talking to each other.

It's refreshing to see a movie that takes the effort to pack a lot of even the smaller roles with women rather than assuming default male. The playwright she looks up to is a woman, the kid she is mentoring is a woman, the parent taking care of the child is the mother, the celebration she has to go back home to is a baby shower.

I really appreciated the choice and the perspective.

Re: Nathan For You returns in September and gets a bonus check-in special

*horsies

Re: Friends From College introduces even more friends from college, including Seth Rogen, in its wedding episode

And does anyone slap another person's child?

Re: Friends From College introduces even more friends from college, including Seth Rogen, in its wedding episode

I think that was Dean Pelton.

Re: A desperate round of IVF makes for the best Friends From College episode so far

The entire IVF sequence reminds me of the much better sequence on Playing House (which is being criminally under reviewed, especially on the AV Club) which goes through the nitty gritty process of a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. With for-profits, the bigger they get, the faster they can grow while non-profits, the bigger they get, the slower they grow because they become capital starved.

I think two examples of cultural organizations that have scaled and franchised successfully are Bodyworlds and Dialogue in the Dark. Both of them originated in Germany and I'm not sure if there's something specific about German law that is much more friendly to this kind of model?

Re: Master Of None’s “Thanksgiving” presents one of the best coming out stories on television

Maybe you've just never had that kind of relationship but among my circle of friends, it's quite common to show affection by embarrassing the shit out of the person and riding the line of social awkwardness. Being a minority isn't all about being loudly different all the time. Most of the time, you're just doing regular ass shit like a regular ass person except with a minority perspective overlayed on top. It's only during specific rituals or traditions that you're really reminded of the distinction.
