I think what you're getting at is the risk/reward profile of different startups (hail-mary pass being more risky but more rewarding) and the timeline of success milestones. The problem is to broadly group startups as either "consumer" or "enterprise".

From my point of view, some enterprise startups are like the hail-mary pass in the sense that you're betting big on landing a single large customer or account. I've seen some enterprise startups work really hard and ultimately never make a dollar.

Conversely, some consumer internet startups seem less risky - particularly ones that focus on creating a a minimum viable product meeting a niche customer need. Startups that charge a small monthly subscription might be able to grow by a few customers a month. Revenue grows more linearly - more of a sustained drive.

On the other hand, there are plenty of semantic-real-time-geo-network-social startups that seem to have no real idea what their business model will be and are purely focused on increasing their site traffic and capital raised. These consumer internet startups are more hail-mary like.

Re: Dear MBAs who want to work at startups

I'm agreeing with Charlie on this. I got an MBA in 2008 and launched my own startup. Now I'm frequently contacted by MBA's interested in joining up. Fair or not, I perceive MBA's as expensive and loaded up with extra skill sets that any particular position I'm trying to fill won't require, so I'm instantly skeptical. The pitches that work the best communicate that you're not focused on maximizing your initial salary and that you have specific skill sets (non-strategy related) that can immediately be put to use.

Re: Techies and normals

Great point - makes things tricky because often the 'techies' ask for features that 'normals' have no interest in at all. If you're trying to iterate on your product based on customer feedback this can take you in the wrong direction.
