Fan films are, technically, a violation of rights.  We live in a permissive atmosphere, but if a rights holder thinks a fan film violates the spirit or the principle of brand, of course they're going to have it taken down.  I haven't seen the fan film but a "gritty R-rated version" might just not be something Saban is interested in perpetuating.
