At some point last year there was a great white dwarf feature on a custodes army and sisters of silence allies.

Using Grey knights as custodes will also work quite well for you as GK can ally with your templars even though they're psykers. Do a 1.5k custodes army (which really isn't very many models at all, especially if you do some Gatekeeper dreadnaught conversions) and you can combine with your templars for a cool Apoc force.

if you want more details from that WD article let me know, I'll see what I can do.

Sam

Re: FtW Round Table: Must have units

My army list completely changes every week.

Basic troops choices like SM and Chaos Marauders are the only real constant.

Re: My Latest Project ( completely off topic!)

Jesusssss, glad you came out the right side of that episode!

Also glad you didn't have to get, "cut for the stone", as they used to say.

Is this some kind of medical problem you have or something to do with the local water?

Also, Kudos on the new kid, may s/he have a happy birth and grow up to be a geek of titanic proportions. Everything else is just gravy.

After that:

How good technically is the paint job or conversion?
Does the completed work have a strong theme, how effective is this?

The ultimate arbitration:

As the judge, are you thinking "Damn, I wish I'd thought of that!"

It probably goes without saying, but also you need to take into account the experience and ability of the person involved. I.E. A kid from our store showed me his dark angels dreadnaught holding an ork in it's powerfist a while back. It wasn't a superb painting job, or perfectly converted, but it did jump and provide some good laughs whilst achieving what he set out to do.

Re: Reaver Titan Pt 10 (Banner Mock Up)

Totally ninja'd me on the opening comment! ;)

Looks great this way.

Re: "Titanicus" book review plus news...

Nice, nice and... nice!

*goes back to assembling new space marines stuff and giggles insanely*

Re: Emperor's Children banner ideas

The first is kinda Cthonic, which I like. Maybe you should work some bullheaded type look into the face a little more to make it more slaanesh. Although, to me it doesn't look Khornate at all. Maybe slightly similar to the world eater logo but there's nothing a champion of slaanesh would enjoy more than perverting their imagery into slaaneshi stylings!

Second and forth are fine as is imo.

3rd looks something like a piece of perverted harlequin imagary, which also works for the reasons started above.

One idea I just had for the banner mounts themselves... how about sculpting a few stolen spirit stones they've nabbed off the Eldar and tortured a bit?

Re: Reaver Titan Pt 9 (In Color!)

hmm, it's always difficult to tell with forgeworld... because they use non-gw paints and stuff sometimes.

It might be burnished gold, highlighted with burnished/mithril, shaded with scorched brown, and I think I can see a touch of green in the shade too. Then i think it's been glazed a few times, maybe with yellow.

It may be a non GW gold colour at least tho. Anyone know any other brands of gold like that?

Re: Reaver Titan Pt 9 (In Color!)

By mono colour do you mean the ghost flames or just one warm colour?

If you mean the ghost flames then just doing the border you've done bronze in silver instead will work, like on the example wienas has shown.

If you look at the forgeworld example too, Phil did the gold in a very pale sort of yellowish gold.

http://www.forgeworld.co.uk...

It's a nice contrast against the royal blue of the carapace along with the yellow cockpit. Not that I suggest using yellow unless you're completely comfortable with working with that colour. It'd take a LOT of coverage to get the whole cockpit that yellow!

I digress however.

http://www.swintonsart.com/...

The old colour wheel suggests red as a compliment to the blue.

Re: Reaver Titan Pt 9 (In Color!)

I agree with Ron.

The trouble is, the bronze is warm and the ghost flames are cold as ice (ice baby!). So you have a little bit of an odd contrast going on there. Warm plus warm is always going to be the more pleasing effect.

Also, I should mention... those are reverse flames. ;)

Check this out to see what I mean!

http://hot-lead.org/advance...

Re: Using a wash, a quick guide

Which is why I paint them into the recesses. ;)

A really nice fine detail brush is handy for that.

The best thing about those citadel washes is that they don't just stick like mud in the gaps, so you can use them for far more than just the extreme shading.

As to your question, there are far more colours/effects than just those you get in the citadel selection.

One thing I've been doing lately is oil on ork machinary, which I want to be far more shiny and resinous than the matte finish you get from the citadel washes. So I mixed half a bottle of peat brown ink with water and some FFF, added chaos black to taste and ended up with a very naturalistic result.

Other things include making washes with metal flakes for pearlescent effects, seeing as I can never find any pearlescent medium anywhere.

Re: Using a wash, a quick guide

FFF is basically a dirt cheap way of getting matte medium really... not exactly the same thing, but it works, and it's helluva cheap for the amount you get.

I usually get an empty jam jar, add 5-7 tablespoons worth of FFF and then top it up with water. Sadly tho, there are no hard and fast rules to what ratio you'll prefer, but that'll get you started.

Re: Using a wash, a quick guide

Personally, I paint washes into the recesses like i would with any other technique... I always thought having an overloaded brush was just asking for a big mishap, but maybe it's different for other people.

As regards the wash coming off the model issue, when homebrewing washes i mix a little bit of future floor finish/johnson's klear into the mix, which makes it stick into the recesses pretty well and also makes it behave almost exactly like the citadel washes. (Suspiciously like them!)

Also, I'm going to have to disagree with your comment of black washes. I use black washes constantly and all over the place for various different things. Most especially for black, oddly enough. Other than that, absolutely every time I do any silver metal or areas of red.
