Let me see if I can address some of the issues you've raised.

First of all, it's never ideal to simply use one source in a story, but in the case of this series, we've staggered out a number of issues in which a multiplicity of voices will be shared. (Literally, there's a story running in almost every issue from now until the end of the semester, and we're having different students - unnamed and named - comment.) For the purposes of this narrative, we told one person's story in an attempt to represent many others' experiences. Could it have been stronger if we had included multiple students? Yes, but then there are always space limitations to consider. I hope that when you view the series as a package (and you will be able to soon, when we launch our blog), you'll be impressed with the wide number of sources we use.

But then there's the question of using unnamed sources to begin with. It's unfortunate that protecting a student's privacy is also a primary agent for reproducing stigma. At Spectator, we never like to grant automatic anonymity, so for each source, you'll note we try to make it clear what the reason was behind each "cloak." For Audrey, being Google-able to future employers was a concern in addition to privacy, and I think that's one we can all find to be valid (and unfortunate).

But you're right, it sucks. At the same time, it's not our desire to shut out the voices of students who do want to tell their story but are unable to take the courageous but potentially risky step in using their name. We don't think it would be wise to have a blanket policy about sources for this project for exactly this reason - people have compelling stories, and they deserve to be heard.

In some of the future stories, we're hoping to explore more of these issues of stigma and privacy. But you say that you know many people that would be willing to be quoted using their name. We're only a few reporters working on this project, and while we've searched for sources amongst our social circles, passed out surveys, and made online pleas, only a few people have volunteered to speak. Please help us! E-mail me at sadia.latifi [at] gmail.com if you have any specific sources that would be willing to chat.

There's a lot more to talk about with respect to this issue, so when the blog launches (soon!), I'll try and discuss it some more and we'll see if we can start a dialogue that keeps our process transparent.

Feel free to contact me.

-Sadia Latifi, editor of Spectator's Mind Matters project

Re: yesterday! today! five minutes ago! now!

I stick with him being a douche.

Re: The Third Place - More evidence of why dogs are better than cats....

Wait, are you saying the dog is better or not? It adds to his culture of celebrity bit, the fact that he's so untouchable he can't even bother to sit down with convention folk and hear other people speak in person while events are going on. I really felt that way during Teddy Kennedy's tribute, too. I know that moving to the stadium thing is to accommodate more people, but it seems to be too much. I was noticing this when I saw Bill Clinton hug people last night on television...Barack still can't connect with people in the intimate way Bil can.

Re: The Third Place - I am LOVING the Olympics.

Everybody has their flaws. But, on the other hand, I think there's a difference between being with somebody who is racist and being with somebody who is racist/bigoted against a quality that defines you. That may not make any sense. I've dated racist guys before, but if someone made a racially insensitive remark against South Asians, I feel like it'd be a bigger deal. That may not be the most just thing in the world, but I know that it'd be a bigger deal if it directly related to me. I'm bringing this up because you're Jewish, but only you know how much a comment like that can bother you..

Obviously, it depends on what the relationship is going to be...if you're getting serious, you should definitely stop and think about how much it bothers you. People change, but slowly, and you can't expect that of him in the future...

Re: ah, to be 14 again.

I'm sorry but #41 is one of the greatest songs ever.
