I wish there were more concrete stats to compare- but I think some of the problems with these studies come from the fact that a lot of minor concussions go undiagnosed.

Also, there might be another problem with comparing concussion in sports. In my football playing days, I always remember there being at least 1 if not 2 or more trainers on the sidelines, but during my lax days (in high school) there was nary a trainer to be seen for at least half of my games. So if a trainer isnt there when it happens, the poor kid who got his bell rung wont get the infamous 'concussion test' on the sidelines- and whose to keep him from going right back in and getting another one?

Re: The Sports Guy And Gladwell Take On The Writers Room

I dont think the whole concussion 'crisis' will do much to affect sports. new helmets will be developed, more precautions will be taken, new medical advances will help to treat concussions, and rules will be changed. the fact of the matter is is that we all love violent sports. even at a young age, kids seek out violent sports- maybe its a way of expressing ourselves or maybe we just want to push our bodies as far as possible before they break- who knows? there's something to be admired for the person who can be most violent- we see it all the time in hollywood and on the field. watch Russel Crowe in Gladiator or Ray Lewis on sundays and both beg the question: "Are you not entertained?" lets face it, we all want to see the biggest hits where a running back, middie, or even an umpire gets so lit up that his body twists sideways and he topples head over heals a few times. we glorify the big hits and the people who can deliver them, but when the hitee lays on the turf without any sign of movement, maybe paralyzed for life, suddenly we all get a conscience. its a double standard that no one wants to admit to because, well, we love violent sports- both spectating and playing. concussions and other injuries are just the consequences that must be dealt with and i dont see anybody suddenly quitting a sport because they are afraid of a big hit.

But the Simmon's angle is that parents might force their kids into lacrosse rather than football because they believe lacrosse is less dangerous. First of all, I dont think lacrosse is that much safer (there must be some studies out there that we can compare with...LAS get on it). Second of all, I think football is so entrenched in American sports that most parents are willing to turn a blind eye to its violent behavior. I would think that most dads who grew up tossing around the pigskin would rather see their kids follow in their footsteps and 'continue the legacy' if you will rather than start a new sport that they know nothing about. Concussions are just another part of violent sports, and i think unless they really start escalating out of control in severity and number, then they will continue to be an acceptable consequence in the minds of most spectators and players

Re: GMODT’s War On Christmas

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Now I'm done.

Re: Fireside Chat With Andrew Swett, Whittier College

yet another great fire side chat. But do we really value physical contact and collision sports more than the rest of the world? Sure, football is as physical as it gets and its purely American, but thats just one sport. The NBA is about as physical as a conservative game of chess these days since refs are blowing their whistles like Wigand exposed Big Tobacco. And if you look past the HGH-injecting "professionals" of MLB, you can clearly see that its just cricket on steriods, literally. What about Canadian ice hockey, where guys routinely exchange right-hooks during games, and all we got is the bash brothers from MD2? And if Americans love the dirt, sweat, and grind, where's the love for rugby?- Take a trip down south to New Zealand or South Africa and you'll see a real collision sport. And if we're talking about physically-grueling sports, what about wrestling or boxing? I'm not even going to try to pronounce the name of the current world heavyweight boxing champion, and four of the last five have been Eastern-Europeans (the other one is from Nigeria).

Football and lacrosse will never become an "international" sport because, lets face it, you can't find shoulder pads, lacrosse sticks, or even a level field to play on in most countries. Soccer, on the other hand, is and will forever be an international sport because all it takes is a spherical ball, two feet, and a desire to compete. No single country can lay claim to that.

Re: Take 5 With Kyle Harrison: Favorite Basketball Players Of All Time

Not a bad list- but wheres the love for the pure shooters?

Reggie Miller and Ray Allen perfected the art of the catch and shoot with an uncanny quick release.
