I used the tar -xvf command in the wrong folder. The files were copied to my root. I had to delete them. Meanwhile, the cPanel provides a quick & easy process. You upload the tar.gz package and extract it in the file manager. My host provider (Rochen) warned me that SSH is bad news.

Evidently, tar -xvf doesn't over-write the existing files (on my host at any rate).

Re: prior comment about gzip format: I made a mistake copying the link. When I tried again, the commands were successful. One problem: The update didn't take even though there was massive activity after tar -xvf.

So close! I received this:

gzip: Joomla_1.5.11_to_1.5.12-Stable-Patch_Package.tar.gz: not in gzip format

What did I do wrong? I used the gzip -d command as specified. The above file was saved successfully.
