I remember being totally engrossed in this storyline when I watched it on TV. I complete agree with your points. We can imagine the story going into a more engrossing, more complicated direction. But the events of this volume show that what is presented right here is about as far as the series is going to push things. An entertaining volume, if a bit of a tease for things to come.

I share your sentiments towards this volume. I would love these episodes if they were more committed and permanent. It really felt like what should've been a seminal event, ended up being a transient one. My interest in the series really started to waver with the change in setting. Mt. Hakurei was a great & memorable destination. And while Kikyo's demise was a "great" moment (I actually liked her character, I know, strange), the fact that we just end up chasing Naraku again with hardly anything else changing overall is a bit of a downer. I was like, "great! Now they get to fight a baby. An evil (very creepy) baby, but a baby nonetheless.

I wrote a long and thought out comment and then the browser restarted and it's gone. So here's the short version. I think the show made subtle commentary on the need of hairstyles to define a character's design. Show was spectacular, but I love the characters so much that I can't help but love it.

my article of the week. Some common sense has to be used here. The person should be able to play what they paid for on whatever equipment they wish. "Buying" something and then being told you have to "buy" it again to look at it on your TV or another computer is stupid.

Actually had an audible gasp when you guys crowned Panty & Stocking with a 5/5. Maybe you guys aren't a bunch of haters after all. Nah. You're still haters. But hating is fun... so I can't hate on that.

I really want to give Iron Man a fair chance, but your & everyone else's reviews haven't made me much more interested. To be honest though, I just don't care at this point. If you can't make Iron Man awesome in 6 episodes, then you've failed. You're trying too hard.

Ichigo Mashimaro & Azumanga Daioh definitely come to mind when watching this, but can't say I'm excited. I love my moé as much as the next moé lover, but it is starting to wear on me. But if it is genuinely funny and endearing then I'll watch. I'm a fair anime fan.

From now on guys, check myanimelist.net if you wanna see how many episodes a series is gonna be. They're pretty accurate. In my experience mecha is generally a slow burn, especially the longer a show is supposed to air. That said I'm glad you guys didn't drop Star Driver early on. Had a good laugh at the Iron Man segment when it started with not "how did you enjoy the show", but "how bad was it?" Makes me feel a little better that I ignored that show after the first episode and picked up Otome Youkai Zakuro later.

By the way, no judging on the eroge. You'd be surprised how many people have read "Bondage Fairies." *ahem* Not me, of course. Good podcast guys.

I'll take a handful of jellybeans over Kirino any day. But I like what was said about her in regards to her gender. If she was a dude, she'd be a piece of sh*t. And since I don't generally discriminate based on gender, she's still a piece of sh*t. I don't even think Mikoto needs to be compared to her. Mikoto clearly fits in the tsundere classification. She's very likable (to men and women alike *wink*), and not hard to like at all. Even when she's in tsun-tsun mode I still find her tolerable. Kirino's too extreme for that category and needs to placed with Asuka (Evangelion) in the Hall of B*tch.

I dabble in the consumption of yuri works myself from time to time. Sasameki Koto probably being one of my faves as far as anime goes. Aoi Hana I thought had some good moments, but the anime was a bit slow for my tastes.

The manga I most enjoy is the fluffy Girl Friends that you spoke of. I'm also starting to get into Octave (very sexual) and Hayate X Blade, which has come highly recommended to be several of the yuri fans I know. It's heavy on the comedy, but I'm looking forward to the action.

All the pics you used for this post are great, but the Wakoburn pic is GOLD.

I think I'm getting the same thing out of this show that you are, though I hesitate to compare much to TENGEN TOPPA GURREN LAGANN as opposed to RahXephon with Utena-style fights. Every episode is about the characters, and I can appreciate that. That is what I love about the best mecha series. Anything that can't get the characters right just feels hollow.

true, I'm only a few chapters into the show & I've yet to see anything that truly hints at it being a yuri production besides the almost completely female cast and some of the character types. But it has shown itself to be pretty damn funny.

I like what you were saying about the fine line the show walks. It's like the fly-by-wire technology in aircraft. A show like this on its own isn't meant to fly. Without a ton of research and hardwork this show wouldn't be possible. It's nearly a miracle this series succeeded the way it did. And that's why Gainax is my favorite anime production studio. They make a business model out of doing the ridiculous and over the top and making it memorable, and not just a spectacle.

As for that ending, I've seen enough of their work to realize that there's no point in going into a rage over the endings. You either ignore them, or accept them and move on. Great review.

I KNEW IT! I knew I loved the music in this show for a reason, but I couldn't figure out where I got the nostalgic feeling from. I love .hack//SIGN's OST's to the point where I used to play the DVD's special music only soundtrack when re-watching the show. Granted I often fell asleep during those re-watchings due to the pace of the show and the often soothing nature of the soundtrack, but I loved it nonetheless.

I have limited, but varied experience with Shinbou's work so I kinda know how you feel. Sometimes he likes to use his style and talent to its utmost level, but often I enjoy his work when it's more subtle and he doesn't exert his techniques to a level of 10 out of 10. This show feels dynamic without feeling "showy". It's beautiful without screaming it. It has been an easy to digest, easy to love joy so far.

The character designs were also a small peeve of mine as well. They just stand out and look awkward at times. It's almost as if they had to cut the character design budget (if there is such a thing) back so they could afford all the beautiful scenery. That said, this show is deserving of all the hype so far. This makes things difficult, I was gonna almost ignore this season, but shows of this caliber are pulling me back in.
