I don't think anyone disputes that, least of all me. The dispute here comes with the manner of publishing. He's welcome to print off copies and hand them out on the street corner or mail them to subscribers. He doesn't have a right to have people read them and I don't necessarily think he's entitled constitutionally to distribute his column through multi-billion dollar corporations and their subsidiaries which have hundreds of distribution channels if others don't in the manner Lou outlines above.

Agree about the non-responsiveness. It's his blog and he can do what he wants. I believe it borders on the disrespectful to have open comments and then just fling verbal poo at the commenters who spend their time reading and posting thoughtful comments. If he doesn't have the time to respond properly, it would just be better to turn off the comments.

It's a shame. I don't know what his traffic is like these days, but there used to be a lively and numerous group here. I see a number of familiar "faces" on some of the other blogs so I know some of the former commenters are still out there somewhere, just not here. Maybe they've just gotten tired and moved on as I sometimes have.

Thanks for your clear and detailed response. I agree with most of it and I think I might agree with you about press organizations except for the size of some of them. Clear Channel owns 900 radio stations. Gannett owns about the same number of daily and non-daily newspapers. I believe that is waaaay too much concentration.

No offense, but you might be late to the conversation here. I'm not a lawyer but OJ states that corporates have absolutely no right of free speech because they are not persons. I'd like to know why a corporation such as GE can essentially have free speech through subsidiary corporations such as NBC - conflict over energy reporting? - but as Lou points out I can't band together with other like minded citizens under a 501(c4) or PAC and have the same. My point is that I have no problem one way or the other as long as both are on the same footing.

And spare me any arguments regarding an objective free press yada, yada.

I'd be happy to restrict free speech of corporations if it also applies to CBS, NYT, and the rest of the mainstream media. Katie Couric, Paul Krugman, et al would be welcome to stand on the street corners and shout or hand out newsletters with all the rest of us.

Probably so. I was responding to OJ's point regarding relative wealth and power. We can't know but I bet the pronouncements of Caesar were disregarded with much greater peril than the (modern) Pope's. Agreed?

A perfect example of my comment downstream about the many things I read here not even being wrong.

Berlusconi is barely in the top 100 richest people in the world and he can't seem to rid himself of pesky Italian prosecutors. Lou can probably give you a better estimate of the force projection of the Italian army and navy but it probably doesn't strike fear into much of anybody.

The Catholic Church has wealth but it should have after hoarding it for 20 centuries. What power does the Pope have? Even Catholic Democratic politicians here in the States neither obey nor fear him.

Many of those of a certain age are no doubt the last beneficiaries of that extinct dodo of a benefit, the defined benefit pension plan. Younger ones are likely recipients of generous government pensions. Virtually none of us in the private sector will be so fortunate.
