First time I've ever really appreciated the marathonic urge as anything other than machismo or masochism. Thanks for sharing the clear view that follows the white haze.

Re: Top Doctors 2010

Conventional polling methods do tend to bias in favor of population centers. We are planning on instituting some new tactics to our methodology next year that should allow for a better picture of top doctors across the state. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts on this.

Re: Fitness kaizen.

Thanks, Dave. I'm not in awful shape, but after I turned 55 (I'm 57 now) I somehow got stuck about 25 pounds over my previous weight (which I had worked my way down to in mid-life after letting myself go for a few decades of marriage, child-raising and career building). I've struggled with this "plateau" for a while, but I've been seeing a nutritionist and her advice was pretty similar: one step at a time. This is good counsel and I appreciate the reinforcement.

Re: Desperately Seeking Salinger

Each time I read this I enjoy it. You probably won't find that fact in the dictionary definition.

Re: Pronouncing Portsmouth

The best shibboleth is still pronunciation of the capitol city. I find that I gravitate back to Twitter more than any other social media tools. Not sure why I like it. I follow a pretty weird flock and most of what they post is either just noise or novelty. Still, I have definitely gotten information I'd have never known otherwise as a result of Twitter, and I sometimes get news there before it appears on any other aggregator I use..

Re: Round and About NH: Canterbury

Great photo. Among the many thank-you notes we've gotten is one from Gen. David Petraeus. I'm sure he wouldn't mind my posting it here:

Dear Rick, thanks very much for the copy of the November issue of New Hampshire Magazine and for being selected as one of the New Hampshire residents "who make it happen." I should note, however, that I can only accept such an honor on behalf of those who really do make it happen. In this case, that would be the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Coast Guardsmen, and Civilians I was privileged to lead as the commander of the Multi-National Force-Iraq.

Sincerely, thanks again, and Live Free or Die - General Dave Petraeus

Re: Folk Art with a Twist

Jim's work blends humor and pathos in a timeless way. A person can, like myself, reject random purposeless evolution, believe that a transdimensional being created everything and holds some kind of sway over it, and still not believe that a genealogy complied by a Bishop in the 15th Century is an accurate chronology of the universe.

Likewise a person of sound mind, like the numerous folks, police and civilian, who saw something unexplainable in the sky over Exeter in 1965, should be able to say, without reservation, that they have seen a UFO. Now, if you see the UFO at Shirley MacLaine's house, I think you might want to keep your mouth shut if you have presidential aspirations, but maybe that's just me.

Re: It’s …—… for Morse Code

Until I saw it in the context of your note, I never realized that Homer Simpson's famous ejacultory is actually a bit like a mash up of "dot" and "dash." So in Homer-speak, the official distress signal would simply be D'oh! D'oh! D'oh!, D'oh! D'oh! D'oh!, D'oh! D'oh! D'oh!
