The beginning of 40-Year-Old Virgin was misogynist, too--that scene with all the guys sitting around talking about fucking women?

This is a direct result of not only patriarchy, but the fact that Hollywood knows adolescents are the biggest movie spenders, so films aren't made for grown ups anymore, hence most of them are terrible shitfestivals. Why the movies, then, are increasingly misogynist when girls are presumably adolescents too paints a more disturbing picture of whatever is wrong with Judd and society at large.

My favorite part is that they are basement-dwelling mouth-breathers who affiliate with one another because they are angry about being rejected by the cool popular jock guys. So how do they set themselves apart from those intellectually inferior types who they, like, totally WOULDN'T be friends with even if they wanted to be friends with them? By using the same unbelievably stupid ideas for which they excoriate teh dumb, cool jock boyz and girls who socially ostracize them in the first place. HOLY STUPID!

My aunt is really weird and anti-fat, which has always made my (thin male) cousin angry, so now he ONLY dates fat girls as some sort of adult rebellion against mom, and true proof that weight wouldn't have mattered to him either way (though now he has an active preference because of her Weird). When talking about his newest girlfriend to me at Christmas, who I was going to meet in a few minutes, she stupidly noted, "HE SEEMS TO ONLY LIKE THE BIG GIRLS," like mentioning her weight and something like that was a totally normal thing to say--especially in passing reference to someone I'd never met! And I was about to meet her, so it was like she was warning me or something, as though everyone else would be horrified by the surprise of someone's body size the way she hatefully is! She is totally clueless about how off-the-charts abnormal her thinking is, and that we all make fun of her the second she graciously leaves. In sum: I'm so happy he only dates heavier women.

DW, I'm so happy you traded up! The first guy had problems way deeper than just being anti-fat and controlling and emotionally hurtful. I think his pathetic anger bread is empty inside, so he'll always be wondering how other Nice Guys will be perceiving his car, how expensive his shoes look, how many properly hideous twisty bushes his front lawn has, whether his arm accoutrement--I mean wife--is hyper-conscious of how other generic morons perceive her, etc. Because other stunted dickheads with bad taste in everything might judge him otherwise!

Liss, I know I'm a relatively new commenter and all, but I really, totally, whole-heartedly respect and admire you more than anyone I (don't) know, and I love you for doing what you do every day without "getting flustered" (which is what the two bigots with whom I work at my new job said about me this morning while they defended some pretty overt, contemptuous, work-inappropriate bigotry). I am still rattled. I hope this isn't a thread derail, but how do you do it? How do you not get rattled by other people's hatred when they hate you to your face and are totally unapologetic about it? I want to be a teaspooner and be just like you one day, but I get too enraged. I could never give such a brilliant interview as that, because this stuff is so triggering for me. Is it your personality, or does it come with time? Or did you learn any tips along the way? I am in awe of you on a regular basis, by the way.

The bigots don't understand that maybe their world views arose from internalized social influences and didn't spring from pure logic. And maybe, just maybe, they don't realize that they're not arguing based on logic at all. GASP! You mean teh menz argue what they feel instead of learning to logic?

Fatphobic people have been brainwashed by the deeply flawed Western medical paradigm and stupid sensationalist media sources that they would otherwise ridicule for their lack of credibility were it on any other topic other than fatness. Here is the only thing that has been proven about fatness: a very specific type of fatness is the most deadly, and that is visceral fat, which most middle-aged white people (especially) have, regardless of their BMIs! GASP! EVEN THE THIN ONES HAVE IT! The reason for its health effects? IT CAUSES INFLAMMATION. Abdominal adiposity causes inflammation as well, but not as much as visceral fat. You know what else causes the same inflammation though? Eating meat. Grilling food. Cooking at high temperatures. Why don't I see mobs wielding torches, pitchforks, and mangled English at people who are eating white bread and meat on the street, or drinking pasteurized milk? Why don't they insult joggers at the park who overpronate, which causes a cascade effect throughout the knees and hips that cause long-term inflammation which leads to the same vascular damage and premature aging?

The point is that you don't care about anyone's "health." The health claims in relation to obesity are not only horribly skewed, but often flat-out wrong; they actually exist because fat people are routinely targeted for bigotry and ridicule, and we've been desensitized to all the myriad ways fat people are dehumanized on a daily basis, including in this "entertaining" game.

Good to know I'll probably stop being triggered by it over time, since that's the only way I'll be both effective and happy. The social support does wonders, you're right--after the battle was over, I thought about how much better life would be if I knew more progressive people in person. I don't know ANY (!), because it wasn't a characteristic I discovered about my oldest friends until we got older and I brought up these topics. What I found out about them...well...sucked. A lot of them are no longer friends as a direct result. The feminist blogosphere keeps me sane, seriously.

Yeah it's such bullshit when their line of thinking is, "my bigotry hurts you, ergo if you want to be happy, the best thing is to let me retain my privileges, and YOU should change by maintaining the delusion that it doesn't affect anyone (since I pretend it doesn't affect anyone, since it doesn't affect me)," like mandatory Buddhism is the answer rather than pointing out the root problem and expecting the person to have some modicum of decency and responsibility towards changing something so simple.

I just joined a UU church last week oddly enough, and you and Greg (and Linda) will be in my thoughts every time I'm there. Hopefully the unity of the community will be strengthened as a result of this horror, thus doing something to carry your friends' names, values, and stories on, however minimal compared to the greatness of their characters.

I'm not saying anything on legality issues, but if pot smoking becomes more commonplace as a result, I hope people aggressively publicize the fact that marijuana can, over time, trigger schizophrenia in susceptible individuals. Most people aren't aware of this, and I have a feeling that will fall by the wayside and hurt people who are at risk for, or develop, one of the most devastating illnesses that lead to being treated exceptionally poorly by pretty much everyone in society.

How frustrating, I'm sorry. Just another nail in the coffin of the idea that prominent women in the workplace is all feminism and women need. Women still dance to the tunes of their misogynist overlords until they are actually educated about feminism (and their potential perpetuation of sexism via internalized misogyny). And the men to whom those women answer need to be educated about feminism as well so women aren't in the position of currying favor with men who believe in he status quo.

Men like pointing their fingers at the brutality of other men, grouped by religious sect or politics, so they themselves can feel like better men. Pointing out something that implicates them as the oppressing group feels too uncomfortable, as stalking is so common that it really does implicate all men when a light is being shone on this social issue.

Those teeny tiny little JUMPING spiders. Those fuckers move in scary ways, and they are furry. They're the only ones I haven't been able to train myself to catch and release rather than killing them.

Fear of snakes or spiders is genetic. It's so primitive that if you have the gene, you react to the spider or snake prototype before your brain has even processed what you've actually seen. Interesting studies were done on that!
