I'm not exactly an "urban" gardener, since I live in Northern Michigan, but I can't have an in-ground garden (my lot is too shady), so I do containers on my deck. Honestly I'm not sure WOULD do an in-ground garden, because I love the easy routine my containers give me, just by taking a couple steps out of my kitchen.

Usually I buy organic transplants from my co-op but am thinking about starting my own seeds this year. But, since our last frost day is in MAY, it'll be awhile unless I want to crank up my heat and start the seeds indoors. Jealous of your SoCal growing season!

Anyway, keep up the good work, I'll be looking forward to following your progress!

Re: How To Avoid Storing Food in Plastic Containers: My Almost Plastic Free Kitchen

I've started my plastic-free quest recently as well. To supplement my collection of re-used jars, I bought a set of Pyrex no-leak storage containers and also some jelly-size Ball jars (that you would use for canning) for smaller stuff.

I wouldn't worry too much about your appliances, I think the main thing is not *storing* food in plastic. As for your herbs, why aren't you growing them in containers and just snipping when needed? ;-) When I do buy them I like to put mine in a glass of water (like you would flowers) and keep them on the counter top. ChicoBag also makes a set of vegetable storage bags you might want to check out, too. They don't keep things as fresh as I had hoped, but it's better than getting cancer from plastic!

One thing I'm not sure about - how do you keep bread fresh without a plastic bag? Storing in paper, the loaf gets rock-hard.

Re: How To Avoid Storing Food in Plastic Containers: My Almost Plastic Free Kitchen

Hey, also... As I've been getting rid of plastic I started thinking about all the plastic containers I garden in. Are toxins leaching into my soil and contaminating my plants? I checked out Nolan's blog and found a link there to another blog, "My Plastic Free Life" by Beth Terry. She has some great info, and a blog post on how to keep bread fresh: http://myplasticfreelife.co.... Awesome!

Also thanks for the link to the plastic container rationalization. Right now I'm re-using pots that I got from a landscaper (he has MOUNDS of them)... your blog got me thinking I should at least switch to food-grade plastic.

Re: Share Your Spring Garden Ideas

Whiskey barrels! Look at the reality on the ground and you'll understand pretty clearly why the majority of people (let's call them "They") in this country will vote D on November 4th.

1. They are sick of Bush. They see a Nation which has been driven into the dirt. A Nation which is vilified by its (growing # of) enemies, tolerated by the neutrals, and embraced with embarrassment by its allies. People want to be proud of their Nation at home and overseas. They are not.

2. They are scared. They don't understand all the causal realities of the meltdown (to include Clinton, the Dem Congress etc), and they don't care about that. They care about what they see. And what they see is a lame-duck sitting executive who has not led in the least during this trauma. What they don't see is a crisp, well-delivered, confident message coming from the Republican nominee. They see indecision, bewilderment, and paralyzing angst. Beyond that, by supporting the bailout, the Republicans continue to shred their Libertarian core. The people see this hypocrisy.

3. They don't care about political-economic theory. Call it socialism, neo-New Deal, what have you. They care about practice. So a message which tells them that they won't pay more if they make less than $250,000 resonates. They push back against a message which says that the quadruple chinned CEO of (name the hydrocarbon firm) is going to get richer, despite the fact that cash injection up there will "trickle down."

4. They value vigor, confidence, intelligence, and balance. And they will vote on that alone. They don't see that in the Republicans. They see a cranky, not particularly visionary, old codger and his transparently political fish-out-of-water veep selection. They also value experience, but McCain's experience comes across as "thinking about yesterday." If experience were pitched as establishing a firm base from which to launch into a scary, yet exciting future of challenges and potentiality, that would have been a different story.

5. Character is important. They see the same associations you see with Obama and ACORN, Ayers etc, but their calculus is different. They write it off to politics and "strange bedfellows" and all the rest. They don't see it as a showstopper. It matters as much as Bush and his drunkenness and coke experiences. Like, it doesn't. No one doubts McCain's character or heart. It is simply not enough.

So, all in all, I think this is very understandable. I really do get it.

ps. This is Todd. I'm not trying to hide behind an alias. I'm simply not smart enough to figure out how to change my profile. I'll figure it out though.

Re: As goes Michigan

I guess I figured it out after all. I say this not because you can't make a case that it doesn't exist; because you can and it does, as a matter of statistics.

But we don't live in a society where there is only one option for where to get one's news and information. Quite the opposite. We live in a society where there are myriad outlets.

We also happen to live in a society where the notion of a purely objective unbiased media as alluded to by the Prof up above is a wild-eyed pipe dream. Bias can be mitigated fairly well when it comes to the world of science and experimental observation, and follow-on interpretation of that data. Not so when dealing with the world of human behavior in a context of incomplete information and judgment under uncertainty. This doesn't mean that Fox and MSNBC are inevitable results of the human condition, but that a news outlet with asignificant amount of bias, no mater how hard they try, is.

Read this (or watch the video) for more. It is Kahneman's 2002 Nobel lecture on his, and partner, Amos Tversky's (deceased) work:

http://nobelprize.org/nobel...

So let's focus on what we can do, and on the fact that balance can be found, if you look.

-This Collective Cortex we call the web allows millions of digital synaptic kisses to take us anywhere our curious and tenacious voting minds want to go, to include conducting our due diligence prior to a major poll. It takes a responsible citizen to want to do this, though.

-Radio is dominated by the Right ideology, but even there, you can find balance if you look. It takes a responsible citizen to want to do this, though.

-TV is a huge factor, of course. Fox News, an outlet of the Right, has a typical viewership of 7.1 million. Fox's outlets, millions more. Still, as a percentage of all TV news viewership, the Right is represented by only 25% of networks. The Left certainly dominates visual broadcast news. But it as easy as a click of a button to sit back in your chair and find a different perspective. It takes a responsible citizen to want to do this, though.

-Print? To every Washington Post there is a Washington Times to be found. Read'em both and you'll find yourself in that unbiased equilibrium area. It takes a responsible citizen to want to do this, though.

So, for me, people who say that the MSM is as much of a game changer as they say it is have a problem. They seem to think that:

a. there is no choice, or, if there is
b. people are helpless lemmings who simply fall under the Left's narcotic spell, or,
c. people are lazy and irresponsible and choose to believe the first thing they hear
d. they don't know they are hearing a biased perspective

I know it sounds reductionist, and it probably is, but it all boils down to the quality of the electorate. The Right is forced into position where they want to find a solution to their election problems by pointing at something, the MSM, and blaming it. Perhaps they ought to be looking, instead, at the sanctified and core idea of individual liberty and responsibility and indicting it. But if they do, they compromise their own ideology. See the hypocrisy?

Re: As goes Michigan

...and Troy, you are correct.
