Just curious Michael - did you see Beowulf in 2D the first time around or was it IMAX or Dolby 3D?

I have seen many IMAX 3D movies before and they took up the entire screen - what is it, 7 stories tall? Well Beowulf only took the center two-thirds of the screen, like watching a widescreen movie on a 4:3 TV. So I am assuming that the screening was with a Digital 3D projector onto an IMAX screen and not the IMAX version which would be much bigger. I would think that perhaps this is what has happened across North America? I have not had time to check with IMAX or Paramount yet, but the production and shipping costs of the absolutely huge and heavy IMAX film reels would not be very pragmatic - plus the fact that the movie was shot digitally anyway!

I agree regarding eye strain. With each eye effectively seeing a blank screen half of the time (but too fast a flicker for our eyes to see), movies tend to become dimmer. I have been hearing very good things about Dolby 3D. I may reconsider my recommendation of Real D based on their cheaper and brandable glasses and go with Dolby 3D and potentially a better performance. We'll see.

As you know from my review, I gave the movie 8 out of 10 stars. I saw it at IMAX 3D and while it was impressive there were parts I knew that were sub-par. Like when the King threw coins at the camera, it was all very blurry while I have read other reviews where the coins were crystal clear and impressive. I am going to check out Beowulf again this weekend on Real D this time and compare the two.

8 out of 10; IMAX 3D.

Thanks Liam. I had read that article actually, thanks for reminding me! Hopefully systems like this will allow directors to shoot in brighter conditions and have it appear realistic. BTW, I did not have trouble with Beowulf being too dim, even the 'outdoor' scenes.

Thats a good question at its core. The technology that Make3D has made available to me is specifically for images at this stage.

One of my sponsors, Passmore Lab, focuses on the conversion of 2D to 3D movies. I will be reviewing their services at a later date. Stay tuned!

I can't say with absolute certainty because I didn't hear it directly from Jackson or New Line. BUT my sources are, as I said, very close to those people. And I wouldn't risk posting it if I weren't very confident! Let's hope so indeed!!!

Oh and to be clear, I am 100% certain of Jackson Directing "The Hobbit" - the rest of the post is certainly strong but not as strong as him helming it because I have heard that from two independent sources and not just one. Heck just him directing it makes me excited. What about you??

Personally I liked the IMAX a little more. Bigger screen and sound. But the difference is very little really. I want to see it Dolby next, but that may take awhile!

Great review Jearr! I felt the same thing as you with the spear. IMAX has such a huge screen that the spear literally seemed to separate from the man in a unrealistic way. Don't expect this kind of spectacle from someone like James Cameron who is doing "Avatar"- he will be a traditionalist and shoot with artistic flavor. Zemeckis is a great Director for sure - a special effects leader - but I believe Avatar will show a new side of 3D not seen before.

Fortunately that is not the 3D they have in mind! Please remember that Beowulf is Zemeckis' vision and not Jackson's or Cameron's and it is totally performance capture and voices.

"The Hobbit", should they indeed go down this path (and it seems likely) will be Live Action 3D (real actors) with perfcap (like Gollum) and CGI thrown in - completely different my friend!

Ummm - see my updated post. Nothing has changed. My sources are in his camp too but risk their jobs telling me. Yeah, a secretary (or whoever) for Mr. Jackson is going to confirm or announce that a massive 2 film 3D project is a go complete with converting the trilogy? No way. Jackson and/or New Line's Shaye would make that super mega announcement- c'mon, I mean seriously! Expect an announcement between tomorrow and 2 years as my sources have already indicated. We shall see what we shall see. But I remain confident - nothing has changed.

Will. Yes I am interested in web hits. Very astute of you. My sources have caught this early before it is officially announced. Quite simple actually. Comparing the strength of sources is an exercise in futility. I guess you are ignoring the fact of just how big The Hobbit movies will be. But the "full shelf" notion that you have, certainly would push back The Hobbit until God knows when right? District Nine needs to get done first right? C'mon! Fine with me GBillz. I am just passing on information that I believe is very relevant to a LOT of people. Remember this comes from the sources that gave us the Ney'tiri concept art photo which WAS ESSENTIALLY PROVEN LEGIT by none other than 20th Century Fox. I trust them, I believe that they want to show the world the magic that they are working on and will be working on. Thank you for your comment though and your readership - I try to get the best info I can. Hopefully that comes out in my writing! I realize that I am a relative new comer to the scene (this blog has been around since 2006, but really ramped up last April) but I intend on staying and making a strong presence.

It discusses just what you are talking about - 3D does not necessarily mean a Beowulf type movie. Lots of people come to this conclusion so you are not alone. The best 3D in my mind will indeed be the live action ones where the actors are real. You will see soon enough with U23D, a concert 3D movie by the rock b and U2 coming out in January: see this post:
