I'm not sure if you noticed how much "Brick" fanboyism I was surpressing when he was like, 3 feet away from us last night, but it was significant. Fortunately, the possibility that Rian Johnson was in attendance tamped that shit down to a foot-twitching non-murmur.

This one was more like two single deckers joined with an accodion. It hit some nice things downtown, followed by a long succession of increasing poverty and desolation-- Fortified schools. Unanchored strip malls. Discount promises in blood. We have palm trees, but you kinda have to comit to a certain kind of ignorance to truly love them. I don't know, public transit did a really good job egging me back into biking.

Totally, I'm carving my first one of the season today. Intricate pumpkins can be really hard to not bust chunks out of. (I had to cheat and do a toothpick repair with one a few years ago.)

"Parks and Rec" is a pretty great show (and I feel like it's several degrees deeper than it would have anyone believe), but as a culmination of so many character arcs and moments that've been built up for years, Office was lovely in ways that only a brilliant show that's given you four years with it's characters can be.

Yeah, I guess I quit using the term screamo when it became clear that it was basically gonna turn into a marketing term. Also, I think at a certain point I that (whether or not it was actually intended this way) fourfa etc. had kind of become a prank on anyone who likes anything related to emo. In a technical sense, true screamo doesn't sound like the mall stuff. However, it pretty consistently sounds like hardcore with an injection of shrieks, spasms, and almost zero investment in appearing cool: hence, I usually call it spazzcore or spazzpunk. This is also handy because, if I'm introing someone new to it, I can jump straight into talking about a bleeding edge version of punk rock without having to pleadingly explain that I'm not a Hawthorne Heights fan or whatever.

Bastards irritated me when I first saw it. I want to check it a second time. Zombieland I might see. I am o so sick of Zombies though. Also, who says that gaudy over-the topness is my investment in crank and not crazy energy/intertextual weirdness? To me, Crank is the current apex of a certain set of continuums (it feels more like "Run Lola Run" than "Die Hard" to me) and is ultimately exciting because of what it implies about what you can do with a mainstream film if you pull the right pins out of it. I wish Matt had mentioned Anvil earlier though, cause that belongs on my list. It's the kind of heartbreaker that makes you re-square yourself with this art thing.

"Jesus's Son" just kicked my ass a few months back. I basically read it twice in two weeks. Part of why Carver took awhile for me (this is the 3rd time I've sat down with the book since I got it almost a year ago) is that he doesn't revel in his own cleverness (not that it seems to be a defining thing for him, ingenuity might be a better term). Meanwhile, Dennis Johnson drops at least a few lines every page that make me say "damn," wheras Carver is more cumulative. Like, "Oh, that's where the ocean was that whole time."

I usually half-cook the noodles (you can just crush em' up and dunk them in a half-mug of water that's been microwaved for a minute) and then fry them with honey, butter, and whatever seasoning until they're deliciously carmelized and crunchy. This is also a pretty great way to stretch good stuff (like if you bother to make steak/shrimp/chicken for tacos).

Yeah, having a good layer of calluses is a big thing for me. If shit's raggedy, a nail file usually works. Cuts will geometrically increase in size once for every minute of playing, so time off is a good move on the fretting hand.

Not that I don't love both bands, but you can make a pretty solid argument that Gaslight Anthem make bro music that overflows with cliches and tropes that have been dismissable for a long time as certainly as Counting Crows does.

Why's "Eskimo Snow" is the closest anything has come. I'm at that point with AC, GB, and DP where I feel more fascinated by the liminal zone they occupy (I can justify their acclaim and see how it's supposed to work, but it only DP really impresses me or moves me emotionally, and even then I doubt that I'd have bothered with it had there not been a 2-year timpani crescendo of hype around it and had the cool parts, "The Bride" mainly, not been laid on me at the right party.)
