He was normally happy and could shrug off anything.

But every sunday he said, "Great, gotta go deal with the church crowd."

And I went with him once to see what he meant. I personally try to be extra nice to people in service industries. 1, they have access to my food. 2, really, how hard is it to be nice to someone who has a hard job?

What I saw did shock me. Very large groups of people. His smallest table was a pack of 12. Many, many children and all of them ill behaved. Throwing food, dropping items.

It took him two hours of constant attention between two tables. Waiters make their money by serving lots of tables. So two tables in two hours takes him down to minimum wage.

Neither table, after demanding his full attention, for groups that were huge, left a tip.

And I knew both families. Good, sweet, loving people form my own church. Turned into demanding, upset, unruly folk.

Re: My sentiments exactly - Kubrik with Keir Dullea & Gary Lockwood on the...

Kubrik seems to fit in perfectly to that scene.

Re: My sentiments exactly - VEX

On one hand I find them beautiful and amazing to take in. But on the other, I find it hard to see why someone would build something that, to me, seems so impersonal.

Re: My sentiments exactly - via deadashistory: theduty

After a good chuckle when I read the punch line, I re-read the comic. I also enjoy computers and technology that comes with it's own set of terms and definitions that often do not align easily with common thought processes.

One of the aspects of the aforementioned 'fan club' is often a vocabulary that ends up being exclusive rather than inclusive. This concept came to the forefront of my mind when I saw a man wearing a sandwich-board sign that declared "Jesus Saves!". Having been brought up in the church my entire life I was easily able to decode and recognize this message. And that's what it comes down to. There is a lot of meaning packed into those words. The small phrases that we banter about.

To the outside world it is like approaching a computer for the first time. They have heard of this device, been told of some of the features but there is not an intimate knowledge of the proper or effective ways to interact with it. I understand the message on the sign because I have the background knowledge that is associated with it. A person off the street might not have the reference points to interpret the message.

They may still come to find out more out of curiosity, but it adds a layer of complexity to the situation that doesnt need to be there. I firmly believe there is a disconnect between how we communicate with people and how we should communicate with them.

Proclaiming catch phrases and easy rhetoric is often the most visible form of outreach in the communities that I have seen.

And I am sorry for diverging from your original idea. I feel like this concept may also play a part and hope it might be integrated into the discussion as a component.

Re: My sentiments exactly - Energy Secretary's White-Paint Proposal Puzzles Climate-Change Experts

We worked hard to take this land from the plants and you want to give it right back to them?

What are you, some kind of triffid lover?

Re: My sentiments exactly - Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.
