Funny how Navarette castigates the "liberal media" and yet the whole point of his opinion here is to draw a fake equivalence between right and left. "Their side has racists too!" While that must be true, it does not render both sides equivalent on the issue of racism. Nice try, Navarette.

I think AA's braggadocio has earned some gloat for him (her? who knows?). He's run his mouth enough to be considered an alternative energy source.

You're right about UF. My next door neighbor is a Tennessee fan and he was pretty devastated by the loss. He usually keeps a UT flag attached to a tree in his front yard during football season and he went out after the game and replaced it with an American flag. I've muted my celebration a bit as he's a good man. Of course, he's not on fanblogs. :-)

Still not sure exactly how good the Gators are. Definitely better than the last two years, but not sure they will get past UGA, USC, or FSU this season. I like the confidence level they are showing having defeated two good teams in hostile environments. As loud as the crowds got at Kyle Field and Neyland Stadium, the Gators never looked rattled. I like that!

Your reading is flawed. I never made any assignment as to which teams A, B, and C are. My explanation is a generic case, but I see it happen most every year in the SEC (often victory cycles between USC, UGA, and UF) and the ACC (GT, Clemson, VT). Simple enough for ya?

We skipped the game because of my daughter's school schedule. We were planning to go, but she already missed some school this year. Life at home? Well, I have to be a bit more careful about what I say now or I risk a night on the couch. ;-)

If the BCS used victory chaining to choose opponents, then they never would have placed Alabama in the BCS championship game (i.e. LSU had already defeated Alabama in a direct, head-to-head contest, victory chain established, no need for a rematch). The scenario you laid out is remarkably complex and completely removed from reality.

If the polls used victory chaining then we would never have the scenario where the loser of a game outranks the victor of a game, and that happens inevitably every season.

I haven't even mentioned the most divergent case. When team A defeats team B, team B defeats team C, and team C defeats team A. Particularly in this case, victory chains mean absolutely nothing.

Your proposed victory chain (i.e. USC, Oregon, LSU, Auburn) spans multiple season, further removing your theories from reality.

Of course, I know from past experience with you that you'll never conceded any point under any circumstances, so I surrender, you're a genius, USC rules all, the SEC is overrated, blah, blah, blah, blah...

Ergo, Rice > USC, Q.E.D. Totally logical, right?

Also, you're wrong about the BCS and the polls. If they used victory chaining, there would never be rematches in title games (e.g. last year's LSU/Bama rematch) and we would never have a defeated team outranking the team that defeated them, which happens all the time.

Uh. You're victory chaining? Really, AA? That's beyond weak - it's illogical. I rarely agree with you, but I can usually give you credit for football knowledge. Not in this case. By chaining unrelated victories together, I can probably demonstrate that Rice would beat the Trojans.

Dunno. Preseason polls are really subjective - like Heisman balloting. Some voters give credence to returning starters, some favor trajectory from the end of the previous season, some just vote for Duke every year. As far as I can tell, the only thing that matters is just to be ranked somewhere in the preseason poll to assure positioning for bowl games. Other than that, preseason polls give us fans something to argue about.
