I used to work in Salinas. Anyone who has lived or worked there, especially in the Alisal District, would not ask "why do the police need an armored vehicle?" That said, in general, I am opposed to the militarization of the police.

Here's the rub: the First Amendment trumps, even at SLO, some silly, politically correct student conduct code. Had the University pursued this "witch hunt" (I know, insensitive to witches) it would be looking at a civil rights lawsuit for violating the rights of the party goers.

Here what comes next in my opinion: The appeal defense attorney goes for a new trial based on denying the change of venue, prosecutorial misconduct for failing to turn over all evidence to the defense, and alleged incompetence of the defense counsel. Watch the fun in about 12 months!!

This is mainly the fault of Candee Hooper and Curtis Hill. For decades they knew about Mike and they did nothing to stop him. They both out to be held liable for this one, but they won't. It's the taxpayers who will foot the bill. And please, no more moralizing from Curtis Hill.

This is exactly why a change of venue was needed. Facts outside of the court process coming into the trial. Guilty or not (I have no opinion since I wasn't in court) a fair trial is mandatory. I have serious doubts he got one. And Cantu as the defense attorney? Really? I predict the court of appeal will reverse this one, which is too bad, because the reversal will not be based on guilt or innocence, but rather on legal errors that were made along the way.

The truth hurts sometimes. Fact: Curtis Hill and Candy Hooper knew all about Mike. Fact: They did nothing for decades to stop him. Only when he became too much of a liability (ie, gunning down unarmed persons in public) did they finally act.

The answer is easy. The State Inspector General was created to be an independent, outside law enforcement agency to keep an eye on (and stop) corruption in the Corrections Department. Just add CHP to their mission.

FYI, this wasn't a "circumstantial" case. The various victims said he raped them. That's direct evidence. What you are getting hung up on, I think, is that their allegations were largely uncorroborated. In other words, it wasn't the strongest case. But it wasn't circumstantial.

Good job Sheriff Hill? Have you not been paying attention? It came out at trial that Hill knew this was going on for years, and did nothing. He is a nasty politician, nothing more. Not a hero, not a keeper of the peace, nothing. Just a nasty, self-serving politician who drives around town all day (when he is not kissing rears in Sacramento) in a tax-payer bought car with tax-payer gas. Rodrigues was just one of several bad apples in the SO that he is responsible for. Their is blood on his (Hill's) hands because of this guy and others. I just wish the Free Lance would take the time to do a in-depth story on the rogue's gallery there.

Because Candy never wanted this case to go in the first place. Her "close personal friend" Mike put her in a tough position. That's why she hoped the grand jury wouldn't indict. If she had wanted to prosecute Mike, she would have just charged him by way of a complaint, like she does with everyone else. What's so special about this case, but for her "friendship" with him?

Absolutely Curtis Hill should have done something about this. Both Curtis and his gal Candy knew about Mike for years, but did nothing. Now you know why Wes Walker left-he couldn't stomach what Curtis and Candy were cooking.
