I suppose Silent Design happend regardless wehther the person is aware of the value of Design Thinking. As Gorb and Dumas suggests in the paper, often the silent designers are not recognised as part of a 'formal' design process. However, what interests me very much is that many service designers now is consciously selecting and involving silent designer in order to improve their perfromances. By introducing the value and some proper tools of Design Thinking, they manage to turn silent design into mindful design, which might be more sustainable for the development of a service system.

Qin

Re: Choosenick! » Service Designers needed at Engine

thanks Nick, will pass on to everyone I know :)

I would love to apply if I haven't got another year of PhD to do... hope that you find the people you guys are looking for !!!

Re: Brand Driven Innovation & Service Design

Thanks Joel.

I was watching the conference videos from SDC when I saw your comment - what coincidence :)

To be honest I always find words such as 'script' and 'blueprint' a bit not-so-right when they are used to describe human interactions - they are just to complex to be put into a script...

Maybe the influences on human behaviour a designer can put in to a service system is a better concept than believing that people will follow a script/ blueprint... I still need to find a better way/word to describe that... ummm...

Q

Re: D2B2 keynote speakers

Oh yes yes yes, that's a good place to start :)

Thank you dear James!

Re: Three questions to the Service Design world

Hi Lauren, guess what... among the three questions, the second question is turning into my PhD research questions ! Research, no matter what methodologies are used, mainly aim at creating re-generable knowledge and the actual design outputs sometimes are just by-products, while for practitioner the design solution is their main aim and the articulation of the knowledge comes along with it. However, researchers or practitioners, we all do a bit of both - creating knowledge and improving design. But it is a bit unfair to assess the project outputs with the same criteria when the starting points are fairly different.

I think in SD in the UK, the research is not taking a lead and most of our researchers are 'researching' the designers, using Case Study or Grounded Theory methodologies. However, researchers should also be allowed (even encouraged I would say) the chance to try out their theories/hypothesis/assumptions in real life projects, before such knowledge are consider generable. Remember that even SD companies have their early days...Although Action Research is not generally performed in many PhD research as far as I know, I do see the potential in young generation of postgraduate students who can combine high standard design performance and decent academic research (at least in our course at Dundee). That’s where the hope lies, where the future of new types of research can be created.

Don't forget that researchers have another responsibility other than researching what designers do – they teach. The knowledge they generates goes back to education and produce new graduates that goes to SD companies! The change in education may come slower than what happens in design business, but it does require a firm foundation in research of all kinds at all scopes.

I have no attempt to champion research over practice here. I just feel a bit sad to see that researcher and practitioners will be considered as competitors. What I particularly like about SD as a young community is the close relationship between research and practice here. Also I do know some service designers are/were in academia… it doesn't change the nature of what they are doing, only a twist in the perspectives.
