I don't think she needs her hair combed everyday, especially when it is dry. That will damage it. Spritz it w/some water & rub a good oil through it & it will be fine. It's actually pretty easy.

We never SEE it looking unkempt or unpresentable. We usually see her at performance level or at events. Blue doesn't do any of those things. She's a baby.

"Presentable" is a relative concept. My grandma HATED my locs & was happy when I took them down but was STILL not satisfied with my loose natural. She said I needed to make it look "more natural" as she made a smoothing motion w/her hands. My mom liked my locs better than she does my kinky, undefined 'fro because she said "Real Afros" are picked out and patted to be round. LOL...I just do what I want to do and I am very presentable.

No, really. I only comb my hair when it is wet & full of conditioner. I would never rake a comb through my kinky hair while it is dry. I co-wash every 7-10 days and that's when I comb it. Otherwise, I just twist it or pull it up into a puff/pineapple thingie at night. I shake it out & rub a little coconut oil in the morning to go to work. Pull it down w/my fingers. I have shoulder length hair when it's blown out. My pic is featured up there.

Sounds like you're talking about folks' intent, which while admirable, doesn't speak to the impact that it has on community. No, I don't think people who see merit in Mr.Sherman's degrees are out to do harm at all, but ultimately those kinds of statements support a binary system that we didn't put in place ourselves- one that already exists. It was constructed for us through classism and White Supremacy and we all are a part of it by default. We have to actively denounce it, as Kimberly is doing here.

I'm a Black Nanny of a white child in DC, but I'm American. I've been a childcare professional for many years. Lots of education and training. I've been able to negotiate great wages and benefits for myself, but I do know that I've been turned down for a lot of jobs because I'm "overqualified" which basically means they can't afford me or aren't willing to pay me the compensation that a childcare professional with my amount of training and education deserves. I've always put my own children first (who are "grown & a half" now) and that was understood and respected by the people who have employed me. I've had some bad experiences working for white people mainly because they can be careless and insensitive at times (one white woman called me "The Hip-Hop Mary Poppins" to my face, thinking she was giving me a compliment) but overall, I've worked for people who have respected me as a professional and eventually a valued member of their household.

I've raised a daughter & have cared for 100s of little Black Girls over the past 20yrs. Her hair looks clean & moisturized to me. Blue appears to be a Loved Child. A happy child. Does much else matter? Eff a comb, to be quite honest. That's your hang up, not Mr. & Mrs. Carter's. And certainly not Blue's.

I own about 3 or 4 sweater dresses & I got them all while out thrifting! I love dresses but I hate cold weather, so this makes it easier for me to stay in a dress when the temps drop here in DC. I usually pair them with opaque or patterned tights & a tall boot. I'm hosting a Social Media photo challenge through my blog called #SweaterDressThanksgiving!
