Is it just the way you shot it, or is it bigger than any snapping turtle I have ever seen? (I'm used to large ones being maybe 18-24" from head to tail?) The coloring looks different, too, so maybe it's a different type.

Dogs never realize what they're getting themselves into!

Re: Raccoon

What could be cuter than that??? Thought that top grasshopper almost makes me feel bad for it (almost), the whole thing is so fascinating. The thing that kills them somehow tells them to climb as high as they can and hang on so the thing can propagate better and kill more of the grasshopper's relatives? Amazing.

Re: Tomato Hornworm Bearing Braconid Wasp Parasites

Well that's a wasp I have to love! I have seen things like that in Missouri, but never here in NM where the "tomato" worms are much more prevalent than they were in Missouri. I wonder if we don't have those wasps here. I'll have to look it up! Thanks for this fun and educational post. (I love bug-eating-bug stuff! It's amazing I don't have horrible nightmares about such things.)

Re: Fiery Searcher (Calosoma scrutator)

Excellent photos of a very beautiful creature. I got some more yesterday that survived, but there are so many I have to go through and really decide what to save.? The noisy little creature woke me up this morning (Rufous hummingbirds are more vocal than whatever other kind we have here), so I'm sure I'll be working at it again today for even better pictures.? He's shy, though.

Re: Barbed Wire

Well, it's pretty anyway!

Re: Blue Dasher Dragonfly (Pachydiplax longipennis)

The hummingbird was on a trellis behind some rose leaves.? He wasn't really in the leaves.? They do perch more openly.? This one has been here today as well and just guards one feeder.? He goes from the trellis to the thing holding the feeder to a tree branch behind the feeder.? The tree branch has leaves, but he sits on the edge.? I have noticed, too, that they don't perch hidden very much.? I got some more pictures today (but the Rufous is quite shy of people--the others are not at all) but haven't had a chance to check them out yet.? They're an amusing, scrappy lot right now!

Louise

Re: Blue Dasher Dragonfly (Pachydiplax longipennis)

I'm catching up on way-behind e-mails.

I learn so much from you and your blog.? My dragonflies (rust-colored, yet unidentified because I haven't taken the time to do it) always sit on sticks.? I love it because they like to stay there and are usually pretty easy to photograph.? I knew they were predators, but I never put it together that they usually sit on sticks for that reason.

As for culling through several shots to find a good one...? I'm even worse now with digital because I shoot with reckless abandon.? Doesn't cost anything to develop useless pictures, so I am quite careless.? I can't believe how much I have to go through sometimes to find a good one.? And sometimes there just isn't a good one.

Louise

Re: Cicada Skin Races

I've never seen a "race." But I'm wonderful why you don't have the inclination for a detailed examination of the female's genitalia for identication. Just kidding! I'm fine with spiders. (Anyting with 8 legs or less is fine in my book.) But I'm pretty sure a close-up examination might never make it into my "to-do" list.

Re: Blue Dasher Dragonfly (Pachydiplax longipennis)

I love the colors of these Blue Dashers!
