Okay, the first trailer was a mess and did not say Star Trek to me at all. This trailer is much better. It feels like the Trek vibe, some focus on Kirk that makes sense. I think action in these flicks is good, particularly if it has a point, if it's action grounded in a reality that action must be taken. So I actually think this trailer is a serious win, BUT......the trailer and the movie if if these things remain, has two fails, one minor but annoying and the other just really problematic as hell to me.

Fail 1 - minor, more annoying than it should be, and that is the villain looks just like G'Kar, the Narn diplomat in the Babylon 5 series. Was instantly my first thought when I saw him. That is a fail and how the character designers miss that the villain looks like a ripoff of that is beyond me. I'm going to spend the whole movie feeling like the Federation is facing off against the Narn. it will be an irritant the whole film, like a fly buzzing around you can't shoo away.

FAIL 2 - All caps because this is the big one. WHY FOR THE LOVE OF GOD ARE WE GETTING ANOTHER TREK FILM WHERE THE ENTERPRISE IS DESTROYED!!!

The ship is a character in Trek as pivotal and key as Kirk himself. It's like the unnamed member of the team -Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty, Uhura, Chekov, Enterprise. And we now have in multiple movies, this key member of the team getting killed off and not only killed off, but getting taken out in ways that give her no opportunity to even demonstrate her mettle, to give as good as she gets and to go down hard, go down fighting and bloody up the other son of a bitch on the way out. They keep killing this character, but they never give her death any meaning!

You sacrifice key characters for impact in a story, but this particular plot device of the Enterprise being destroyed merely to allow the crew to then be forced to operate in other ways is becoming a regular thing. It's treating Enterprise like Lois in BVS, having her get in trouble just so Superman can save her. But Enterprise doesn't even get saved, it just gets wasted to be resurrected for the next film, so she can be beaten to death again.

This is the huge and seemingly repeating fail for me with this Trek and the one before it. You can't keep killing this key member of the team and treating the Enterprise like a throwaway plot gimmick.

These new movies need to figure out some balance between the interplay of the human characters and giving the Enterprise an opportunity to shine in some serious ship to ship combat where everything is on the line. But you just can't keep throwing away the Enterprise every movie. It's not Trek without the goddamned Enterprise!

If it's considered expendable and not worthy of respect as a federal holiday as we do with other holidays, it's because it's associated with African American's and our standing in American society. People don't consider it important enough to make the adjustments we make for every other federal holiday we honor by closing schools or other facilities. It's as simple as that. You can't tell me we are all revering President's and Columbus Day so tremendously, but holiday honoring a great American hero of our time is somehow just too inconvenient or new or whatever to honor. It's not valued, and it isn't because its associated with black Americans.

You have, like an earlier person, missed a big point of the article in a way that highlights the problem. There is no "culture of violence ". The majority of gun violence in urban black neighborhoods is coming from a fairly small subset of the population. Ceasefire focuses deterrence efforts on that population. It's not a culture problem, or in other words, there isnt anything wrong with black people. You have a specific subset of people, just like crime in white community. You don't look at their behavior and extrapolate that all white "culture " is broken. This "culture" thing is the new genetic inferiority argument, but no we say culture because the genetic argument has been branded as the racist argument it is.

I understand the cognitive dissonance that the words "registered republican' and "black man" in the same sentence produce. So I won't quibble on that one. I get it. But the statement of being a politically conservative black man shouldn't produce that. I think the black community is generally speaking social conservative leaning, though we have high tolerance levels. Nor do I think conservative ideas of good governance or fiscal management or a strong defense are foreign to us either. We can embrace conservative ideas quite easily I think. The GOP is an absolutely lousy marketer and implementer of conservative ideals however, so on top of their serious contempt for black voters, you have the fact that they are crappy practitioners of conservatism. Hence, we avoid them like the plague.

This "study" isn't worth the paper its printed on and clearly was simply designed to justify continued GOP political indifference to black voters. The giveaway is the laughable conclusion for why blacks vote democratic, pinned on "historical legacies" between blacks and the dem party. HA! Why don't you talk about history of blacks and republicans since black voters and in particular black republicans in the party broke ranks with the GOP with the nomination of Goldwater. They don't mention at all the hostile rhetoric of the GOP that consistently insults black voters by supporting stereotypes about black voters work ethic, or their supposed "cultural" deficiencies. Don't get me started on the voter ID drives that are a solution looking for a problem and are correctly regarded by black voters as attempts to suppress voters that don't vote GOP. The problem for the GOP is that they engage in rhetoric and in legislative policy that is often correctly interpreted by black voters as hostile and insulting. If you actually want a someone's vote, you don't actively insult them or tick them off with what you do or how you communicate to them or with what you say to non black voter audiences about black voters. They don't want to deal with that. Party/electorate relationships are a two way street, but the GOP only wants to talk about the black voter side of the equation and act as though everything they are doing is okay. If it were, they would get some black voter love. It's not. The study is just another way for them to justify why they don't look at what they are doing.

Totally spot on explanation for Sky's mom's actions, twisted by her vile torture from good to evil and great way to wrap that arc. The end? a total WTF moment that left me with my mouth standing wide open in shock.

In the mentions of other student housing developments on the West side, there was a major miss in not noting the Central State Mansion development on W. Washington at Tibbs. There is a huge media day event planned out there Wed. May 6th to celebrate that development and the new NFL sponsored football field. Both of those supported by LISC.

As a politically conservative black man and a registered republican, I'm all for a conservative opinion voice at Ebony magazine. But If you're going to be the conservative opinion writer, then I think you really need to raise the bar with what you are writing about. Black voters don't vote for GOP candidates because those candidates and the party they represent 90% of the time do not address the issues black voters are concerned about. Furthermore, they champion policy positions that are justifiably and correctly viewed as actively hostile to black voters, such as voter ID. Lastly, they use messaging which is insulting, for example, the constant use of memes and messaging that suggests black voters have been fooled or mind controlled into voting democrat. This is insulting, condescending and patronizing and it is more an expression of the contempt in which black voters are held than it is an honest interest in garnering black votes.

If you are going to be a conservative voice, be honest and address that. Don't keep supporting the false notion that somehow black voters are uninformed and therefore we vote democratic. The GOP shares the views and attitudes of its most influential base of voters on the right, and their views of black voters are besotted with stereotype. I'm a black conservative, but I'm honest and clear eyed about the face the GOP shows to black voters. If you want to write from a conservative perspective and convince black voters to give conservative ideas and candidates more of a hearing, you should be equally clear eyed. www.politicalseason.blogspo...

Steve doesn't understand the basis for religious objection to homosexuality. The Bible does have quite clear statements against it. So when he asks where Christians get that idea, it comes right from the text. His riff on the murderer, pedophile, molester actually puts his non understanding of God (which he admits) on display too. Because, as mind boggling as it may seem, God can indeed forgive and accept into Heaven someone who has done heinous things. The Bible has several stories of people who did heinous things and were still used by God. God's ways are above our ways. We could not forgive a person who did heinous things, but God can, because he's God and can do what we cannot.

Now, that doesn't mean that if you do wrong things that there is no consequence. You can do evil and truly repent of it and turn from it and be forgiven by God, but you still broke the rules and you still have to deal with the consequences of that. If you did terrible things, you will likely have to deal with terrible consequences, fallout and damage. So if you murder someone and you truly repent of it afterwards, it doesn't mean you get out of jail or you don't have to grapple with the all the damage and hurt you released into the world. That doesn't disappear. But can God forgive you? Yes, he can because his mercy is simply flat out beyond our ability to comprehend.

But Christians are not outside the bounds of their belief to object to homosexuality. The battle we are having now and have been having for a very long time is how religious objections and the civil and human rights of people are properly reconciled. Clearly, we haven't figured it out yet.

In a midtern election that only about a third of the country voted in? Not even close to a mandate. The GOP was the prettiest girl at a dance nobody attended. When a large portion of the electorate votes, the GOP loses ground which is why they resort to partisan system rigging like gerrymandering, voter ID and now trying to change apportionment of electors. In 2016, they will lose the senate and the white house and they will lose ground in the House because they will alienate hispanics and double down on their reliable but aging and shrinking white rural voter base.

no, something else is going on in these cases. Ohio is an open carry state, yet we have in the span of 6 months two completly unjustified and unnecessary killings by police of black males with toy guns. There is a problem.
