I'd like to post it elsewhere but prefer to attribute photos and artwork to their creator.

(I called it Sears Tower the entire time I was last in Chicago because all the Chicagoans did with the exception of one cabbie, who insisted it was ACTUALLY THE WILLIS NOW. I think it's inhumane as well. And just because somebody else chose to leave their humanity on the ground somewhere is no reason for us to do the same. I don't like the idea of working to justify killing in cold blood.

Re:

Let's
appeal to the Young Republicans by putting another white dude in front
of them. Oh, and he's employed and has a car so he can totally relate to
your poverty. After all, his main worry is not that he doesn't have a job but that his friends don't have jobs. Or that his pay cheque is going to gas! Oh noes!

Hey, Republican dude, we tax gas in part because there's multiple
components to car usage: It's the least efficient way to get around,
using a car blocks up infrastructure, still takes road maintenance,
promotes certain types of pollution. By the looks of this commercial,
you theoretical Republican, live in a city, which means that you also
have transit options. Or you could carpool, which would reduce
congestion and cut your carbon footprint. Hell, why not try biking? But
it seems that the all of the above energy program you are most
interested in is the one that lets you continue to be a sloppy commuter.
If you want to commute by yourself, that's cool, but don't complain
when we tax gas to offset for all the other issues caused by your choice
of commute.

Oh, and you have a job! How nice for you. You
don't want regulations on companies that might give your friends jobs.
So blissful that ignorance, ignoring that without regulations those
companies wouldn't pay your friends enough to pay for their transit
cards, let alone their single passenger car driving ways that you enjoy.
Those companies wouldn't offer work place protections for safety or
harrassment. Those companies would lay people off en masse without the
WARN act. I'm not sure you understand how capitalism works if you think
these companies are just going to shower money on your friends without
those pesky regulations.

ETA: There are plenty of reasons a person might need to drive a car by themselves and I agree that many of them are understandable. It doesn't make you a bad person, but there is a cost to the infrastructure, the environment and so on, and if you add those issues to the fact that driving a car is the privileged and expected thing to do, then taxing gas is partly to offset those costs, and partly to incentivize other forms of transit which are less privileged.

Re: ECHIDNE OF THE SNAKES: Quvenzhané Wallis as Orphan Annie, Ben Kingsley as Gandhi. He's proud of his identity as a gay man, enough that he would be willing to jeopardise his chances with the NFL. What he then asked was for people to focus on his performance, not his identity. What Paula Deen did was get caught being incredibly racist, promoting colonialism and oppressive status quos, and then wibble about it, and hope that folks would excuse her or give her a pass. Maybe it's because we talk all the time about how we are feeling and what we feel up to and both of us know we have carte blanche to say No, not tonight, or Hey, I thought I was up for it but really I think I just want a little cuddling, or I'm done, can we stop now? without the other person taking offense or demanding sex commence/continue. And he's been that person asking to stop sometimes, and I stop. Because that's one should do. It's not that hard, and it has nothing to do with whether or not one of us is in a state of undress. We're two people with respect for each other's autonomy and basic self-control.

Re: Elephant & Castle

British themed, Canadian owned restaurant chain that I actually kind of adore. I remember trying to explain to my husband that she'd told Gwyneth Paltrow not to lift anything beyond the piddly 5 lb weights (except for kids, hardeharhar) lest it cause her to bulk up (which is unattractive in Tracy Anderson's world) and he kept confusedly coming back to me with, "But surely she meant that ironically, right?" NOPE. Not taking every other piece of bad advice she has purveyed into context.

But then irony is made of iron and everyone knows that will make you bulky and unattractive in Tracy Anderson's world.

Re: Open Thread

I want to start off by saying that I really appreciate what you do with Shakesville...and I adore this picture. It's a real smile generator. :)

However, I would really appreciate it if you could source/credit your photos, even the ones used for open threads. It's been a concern to me from an artistic standpoint because many artists and photographers don't get the credit they deserve for their work and not crediting can devalue their work. And then secondly, I might want to reshare the pics myself but might not feel comfy about it until I've tracked down their provenance. (If you can't find a primary source, a secondary source might still give us enough info to finish tracking down, or at least provide us with a starting spot.) Thank you for taking the time to read this and hopefully considering it.

Re: George Zimmerman is selling his original ‘artwork’ on Ebay. It's actually a critique of wealth inequities and a systemic cycle that perpetrates them. Ethan Couch's team coopted the term and the media hasn't called them on it.

It'd be like if you were discussing the term "Technology gap" and then somebody said, "Oh, that's the reason that kid murdered that family so he could have their Xbox."

Or maybe a closer analogy might be if some guy tried to say he wasn't responsible for his wife's murder because he was afflicted with misogyny. I dunno....something about the media coverage of this is really irking me, and it's possibly because they keep casting the people on the powerful side of the equation as the sufferers instead of the perpetrators.
