However, I live in Berlin and spend a lot of time in London. Also, this is where the bulk of activity of note is happening, so I *assume* that's where I'll do most deals.

However, I spend time with startups from all over Europe (probably more than most other investors), so I think a decent chunk will be from elsewhere.

--
Philipp

P. In the UK, home ownership rate is 70% and higher. In Germany, it's 45%. In Berlin, it's 16% (ridiculous, I know). Renting in Germany is great, owning is a PITA.

The large real estate companies are not necessarily in Berlin, but in Frankfurt or even often abroad (London). That's why those places would be a better location.

P. Vertical experts tend to overstate or overestimate their ability to help startups, and underestimate startup knowledge (it's harder to learn unlinear startup thinking than linear industry knowledge).

P. A good CEO will know what went wrong, will be able to communicate openly with his team, and should be able to fix the situation by making the appropriate changes.

If the CEO lets the board play the blame game, and then uses the "the board said I need to fire you" card, bad things happen. Because the "board" card is the get out of jail card that you can only play once and gives away your train station ownership.

P. I'm still waiting for someone to build the Berkshire Hathaway of the internet, a long term holding which doesn't aim for exits.

P. Here's what worked for me:

- Stay with your routine and treat travel days like any other day - don't allow "I'm travelling, so I can go out/eat crap/not exercise" if you don't do it at home
- Find a home on the road - always stay at the same place and build your routines there. Takes a while, but it's possible in the places you go often.
- Stay with friends instead of hotels - a living room and a kitchen go a long way to do things like at home, and discourage late night calls, email binges, and give you some no-work time.
- Schedule road days like home days - and stick to it. Say no to "grab dinner while you're here" if you would do the same at home
- Keep your family's routine - if the kids get put to bed at 7:30, call them at 7:30.

P. If you don't know what is around you, you have no clue where you could go.

This is also important to answer questions and to frame advice. A lot of left field advice is smart, but clearly comes from people who don't know the space well. If you can frame the surroundings and larger picture (because you have a strong opinion about it), it's easier to decide between following and disregarding advice.

P. My general thoughts are that it's probably more important to avoid type IIs, as they drive the returns. As long as the support/amount of attention for the portfolio can be held up, investing in the wrong ones only has relatively small impact on overall success (look at me generalising).

P. Here's an interesting Post Dave wrote about it: http://500hats.typepad.com/...

Really like the way you think about it. In my opinion it is incredibly valuable to use in the series A/B stages of investing, when early patterns are arising. While it can sound like "hey, we just look at the data", the actual implementation depends extremely deeply on the experience of the team (where, obviously, nobody needs to worry about USV).

In the end, do you think it will allow you to avoid more type 1 or type 2 errors, i/e. does it serve to avoid investing in the wrong ones, or to avoid missing the right ones?

P.
