Ouch man... that smarts. I've only seen it twice so far, so I grant you that it may be buoyed by recency, but I stand by my comments on the show — it's a visual masterpiece and an amazing romp. That it ranks higher than all those other films you mention isn't necessarily a sign that I'd rank it better in a direct comparison, but rather that most of those didn't come up in our ranking for this movie. One of the perils of Flickchart that's pretty frustrating sometimes.

All that said, I think you're probably right — a waiting period on Flickcharting brand new films might not be the _worst_ idea. :)

Re:

I adore this comment. Because insofar as you're EXACTLY RIGHT, you have to admit, there are SOME things in here that you can resonate with, right? I mean, come on, that Linda Blair was able to conjure up that performance is both completely diabolical, and stunningly professional, amiright? Gross, but awesome on some level.

Re: Ep 174: Picking the Right Job — Take Control Organizing

Sorry about that — my bad! First, I love the *idea* of it. But because it's not technically system wide, only apps that directly support it and have incorporated it into their environment will make use of it. That means it is tough to take advantage of habits that you have on your main system since they're inconsistently applied in iOS.

That said, I have a boatload of snippets in my account and TextExpander Touch syncs them all flawlessly. The share button in the app allows me to go in and "Copy Snippet Content" for long snippets and paste them into apps that don't directly support the TE API, which is really fine for me, but it required a change of worldview for how I use the app on my iPad.

Still, seems like every day I'm hearing more and more apps that are supporting TE on iOS so I imagine that I'll be able to go back to my original use of it in no time.

That said, if you have only a few snippets that you rely on and want to make them available in iOS, head into Settings > General > Keyboard, and scroll down to "Shortcuts" ... This is the iOS built-in text expansion tool, designed to give you quick access for SMS responses or custom email signatures. But it works really well for system-wide text replacement a la TextExpander.

Now, onto my file system.

I should have been more clear here. My archive system is essentially a mirror of the architecture of my working directories. So, yes, if I have a client "XYZ Company" in my working directory full of project folders, then I will also have an "XYZ Company" folder in my archive into which I move completed projects. That way I always have that hierarchical trigger of which company a project belongs.

Hope that helps!

Re: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Oh man, what a great trip. That's actually on my list of film locations to visit. I used to be much more of a zealot about picking vacation spots but then I had kids they totally spoiled my Star Trek vacation series. I managed to get through the Monterey Bay Aquarium to see where George and Gracie were, but then they lost interest.

Now, the Stanley Hotel... THAT's something I bet I could get them into... Not sure which will come first — my trip or our show on The Shining. Thank you so much. I just found my notes for these episodes and I'm afraid they're not much use for public consumption — they're my rough scratch outline that I used for the show, not something ready to share. That said, I'm working on a new digital series — a part II — and will go back and write up a more detailed blog post of all this stuff. I know it gets cumbersome to keep up and I talk too fast. :)

Re: Ep 112: Tolerations 2 — The Crushing Weight of Reality

Holy smokes, Peter, no -- hadn't even heard of the stuff. While I ponder writing a giant series of blog posts on the topic, I'll recommend a few places to start.

Photography: get a good, fast scanner to get all your old photos online. I'm using a Canon multi-function scanner/printer that is attached to my network over Wi-Fi so anyone in the house can print to it, scan with it, all without having to have a cable tied to their computer. Very convenient. If you're looking for a standalone scanner for faster performance, consider a ScanSnap from Fujitsu. Great document scanners!

Once you have the scanner set up, you'll need an application to catalog your photos. I use Adobe Lightroom on my Mac, though it's available for both Macs and PCs, and in my experience offers the best balance between ease of use and organizing sophistication. Photoshop Elements is another great alternative. If you're a mac user, the gold standard really is iPhoto, and it's pro counterpart, Aperture.

There are many, many tutorials on Youtube to get you started. Adobe has an entire publishing arm dedicated to teaching how to use their tools, a benefit to using Lightroom!

DVDs: These are tougher because there are still some strict copyright restrictions on what you can and can't do with your DVD media. I make no recommendations on that front, as I'm not an attorney, but I can tell you that the application you'll want to use to rip your DVDs is called Handbrake, is available from http://handbrake.fr, and will allow you to strip out your movies from your DVDs, excluding the ads and trailers, and save them as single media files on your computer. You could then put them in your iTunes library, for example, and sync them to your iPhone, iPad, etc. Handbrake is a savvy media transcoder, and can handle many older formats, so your old home videos are quick work for Handbrake to modernize to something you can play on today's devices.

CDs: I haven't gone beyond iTunes for all my CD ripping needs in many, many moons. My current workflow: Put audio CD in computer. Launch iTunes. When iTunes asks if I would like to import media into my library, say yes. Wait. :)

When it's finished, iTunes will automatically search the iTunes store for album artwork. Then, thanks to iTunes Match, the CD is added to my account in the Cloud and made available on all my computers, iPhone, iPad, all my connected accounts almost immediately. iTunes Match is a paid service, available through iTunes for $24.99 per year and worth every stinking penny. :)

Backup. Music and Movies are huge. That makes them poor candidates for cloud backup solutions, as we have discussed on the floor before. For documents and photographs, setting up Carbonite or Crashplan will ensure that your data is safely outside your house in case of catastrophic loss.

For movies, tv shows, consider an external drive connected to your computer at the fastest connection your computer offers. FireWire, FireWire 800, Thunderbolt (on newer Macs), eSata, or USB3.

From there, you have a few choices. If you've actually consolidated all your movies, TV shows and music into your iTunes library, you could simply store your library on that external drive. As long as the drive is always connected to your computer, you should always have access to your media whenever you launch iTunes. For example, I have a VERY large iTunes library (over 2TB of media, much larger than my computer's hard drive), so I store my entire library on an external Drobo (http://www.drobo.com/produc..., an external hard drive made up of drives you can install yourself. Spendy, but VERY convenient for storing and backing up all your data locally, redundantly, at very high capacities. It gets techy, but the Drobo website is pretty approachable. Lots of models and options available.

Now I'm just throwing up info on the wall, Tracy. Let me know if this gives you a starting point or if you have specific questions that I might be able to answer about one area of your work in going digital. Happy to help any way I can!

Best,

Pete

Re: Maia Peters — Rash Pixel

Maia, you're one of a kind. Digital clutter is such a big deal. What's nice is that I think the process for approaching digital clutter is actually quite similar to what Nikki has been outlining so far. The trick is that it requires a new skill set and diligence, and a deeper understanding of the technology and tools (resources) you can use to make sense of it all. We talked a bit about this in our Evernote show a few weeks back, but there's certainly more to take on. As Nikki says below -- stay tuned!
