Gov. Cuomo is all talk, a poll trend follower, Downstate-oriented politician. In the last ten years, I have watched as most of the people I consider friends have left New York to live in states like Vermont, New Mexico, or Tennessee for a variety of reasons...be it taxes, more reasonable gun laws, or cheaper cost of living in general. These friends are constantly reminding me how much less they pay for things like gasoline, home energy costs, property taxes, gun ownership rights, even cigarettes. It's a joke to them that I haven't pulled up stakes and made the move yet. But I've made the trip a few times to visit these people, and in all honesty they are correct...the differences ARE real.

Re: Windows 8 cheat sheet

Every article I've read so far about Windows 8 assumes a certain 'learning curve' that I haven't walked through. That's right...no Windows 7, no Vista. In fact my 'Go to' computer is STILL a Win-98 (yeah it even works online using netscape, so long as it doesn't have to deal with any site heavily dependant on flashplayer) based desktop that I built back in 2001, and I only finally got a Win-XP machine about five years ago. So yeah, I know I'm in trouble with Windows 8 on this new laptop I just bought!

Re: Spotlight Newspapers | Local News

Okay, my first question is...are we looking to expand on the present library, or are we really just looking for what's more commonly referred to as a 'Community Center'.
For if it's the latter, why not just build a separate facility and call it what it is.
I truly do not understand what a library has to do with coffee shops, music & video rentals, or movie theaters. Nor do I understand the need for age-specific segregation.
Yes, I do personally use the present library for such things as taking out a book or two, and the copy machine. Otherwise, I have no clue what goes on in the rest of the building. I can't even tell you if it's a Wi-Fi 'hot spot' or not...
The OTHER 'stuff' could just as easily be located at, hmmmmm...let me see...?!?...ohhhh right...that proposed 'Big Box' shopping complex some would have you believe would destroy the 'ambiance' of our fair town...go figure!
(oh btw...i'm not some 'johnny-come-lately' resident of this town...i've lived here since 1957)

Re: Spotlight Newspapers | Local News

Concerning gun violence, the purchasing of ammunition is not the root of the problem. There are certainly enough laws on the books to deal with this issue already...when they are enforced consistently.
The one concept that seems to escape our esteemed legislators (and the anti-gun lobby) is that a 'criminal' intent on committing any sort of crime does not care what laws are on the books. And if the intent is to commit bodily harm, any object...a tire iron, baseball bat, kitchen knife...will ultimately suffice.
I personally believe (and advocate) that allowing 'concealed carry' of handguns by responsible and well-trained private citizens, along with more aggressive curbing of drug and gang activity, would go much further in deterring most gun violence.

Re: Spotlight Newspapers | Local News

As a life-long resident of New Scotland, I've always
appreciated the tradition of a visit to Indian Ladder
Farms for some good ol' fashioned apple pickin'.

I'm always amazed that while so few people may have
ever heard of Voorheesville, so many know about Indian
Ladder Farms.

Over thirty years ago while stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas,
I had a chance encounter in a chow line with a guy from
western Massachusetts, who revealed that his parents
would make a once-a-year Sunday drive all the way out
here to spend the day at Indian Ladder...imagine THAT!!!

Paul L.
