You followed me on twitter, I linked to your web site via that link and found your blog. I respect and admire anyone willing to share openly their experiences. It has impact.

Re: The Passing of a Dear Friend – for my "brother" Robert Marion

Thanks for sharing that with us. Really helps brings things into better perspective.

Re: Do $200 Laptops Break a Business Model?

Related to this thread are MIDs/UMPC, because this new form factor will supposedly be coming out in full force soon.

That complicates the equation even more. Then you have a device that's larger than a smartphone, smaller than a netbook, with "close-to" netbook functionality sans screen and keyboard size. What kind of spot do they hold in the equation?

I think that many underestimated the capabilities of today's smartphones and the palm Pre makes it even more difficult. Palm Pre, based on the chips they use, can theoretically record and playback 720P video and output display of 1024x768.

So do MIDs, smartphones, or netbooks get squeezed out or do they all live in happy hegemony?

Re: Google GDrive: Ronald McDonald Should be Proud...

Great question, and one that I have been thinking about for years.

The average Joe, even with all of the financial crisis, still trusts banks the most. They give banks their money, which we know, is sometimes the most important thing to some people (unfortunately). It's consumer psychology in action. Banks have real buildings in your neighborhood, have been around for 100's of years, and run friendly billboard ads.

Look at the other options they have..... government (no), heakthcare (no), utility company (maybe).......

Apple (a la' MobileMe) could be an up and comer on the "trust" meter for the average Joe, helped by their store presence, but I would need to research on it first.

Re: Google GDrive: Ronald McDonald Should be Proud...

Different types of users will react differently to this. To those who have been using services like MyYahoo or home banking/investing for years and store everything on it, they may be more open.

But those who haven't done this will need a trusted 3rd party intermediary, lets say, Bank of America, to represent that the data is safe. Just as your money is FDIC insured up to $100K (banks in US), there needs to be some kind of assurance for the mainstreamer otherwise it could take a generation for it to make sense.

Re: Could the Appetite for Netbooks Curb PC Innovation?

I may have come off a bit strong there too. Sorry. You have to go two click into Discus to see my AMD blog. Sites that use Gravatar or Snap that more easily show backgrounds are sometimes easier. Also, like Rahul said, lots of people do google search to find folks. I have 740,000 results, not bragging just the fact.

I also own 9 netbooks that I have taken through HF testing, so I hope I know about that products advantages and disadvantages. I also do HF and teardown on the latest smartphones like G1, Bold, Storm, and of course, Rahul's fav..iPhone.

The only time I ever bashed netbooks was when they were 7", 8GB SSD, Linux, 2 hour battery life..... which by the way sold horribly. Then the design center moved up to a 10" platform with WinXP, larger keyboard, 160GB HDD, I was right on the 7" models as they grew to the 10" model.

Re: Could the Appetite for Netbooks Curb PC Innovation?

"James King," if that's your real, but unclaimed name on Discus, you may want to look-up the definition of shill. I am asking Rahul his take on how he thinks it will pan out. You obviously missed my initial question to him of, "Some are saying that "good enough" will rule the day. Good enough being defined as everything you can do today is good enough and innovation stops." Good enough is the whole basis of netbooks.

Also, while I really don't want to debate the who started the low cost laptop thing, whose processors do you think were in the OLPC?

That's OK, I forgive you. :>

Re: Could the Appetite for Netbooks Curb PC Innovation?

Rahul, a very well-articulated state of the nation on one angle of netbooks. How do you think this will play out in the end? Some are saying that "good enough" will rule the day. Good enough being defined as everything you can do today is good enough and innovation stops. Other say that these "ultrathins" like AMD's Yukon and Intel"s CULV could replace netbooks and that smartphones increase in capability and take some of the current netbook space. Where do you fall?

Re: Flip Video Mino HD hands on - mediabistro.com: MobileDevicesToday

I have tried many different brands (Mino/Aiptek/Koadk) and the Kodak Zi6 is much better than any other of these pocket HD camcorders. Zi6 has HD out port, larger screen, does 720P at 60fps versus 30 fps which looks so much better, takes stills, and has upgradable memory up to 32GB SDHC. If you want smallest, the Mino is your pick, though. Kodak volumetrically I think is about 2X the size. And a few of the larger cap SD cards didn't work well.

Re: Steve Jobs Passes the Torch - Temporarily

Nice close Rahul. I see so many folks on the 'net making comments that are just plain mean. He has a family, we all have families, and as humans we need to show some more compassion.
