I'm shocked that after 50+ hours of Gloomhaven, Matt is still on his first character and only to level 5. My group is on week 36, so about 70 hours in, and we have 3 people at level 6-9 on at least their second character (one guy is on his fourth). Makes me wonder which one of us is playing wrong.

First time I heard that theory was an old George Carlin bit about his childhood in 1930/40s New York. The etymology of slurs and slang is really interesting, but arguing "that's not what it means, it really means this" in response to someone complaining is a supreme case of "ok you're not wrong, you're just an asshole".

I don't know why, but there's something that trips my brain up with a lot of these RPGs in that they seem like just taking folk games or acting/improv exercises and writing down the rules. I don't mean that as a slam, just that it feels weird to me.

Although it may be borderline offensive/juvenile and perhaps a bit lost on the English audience, I always recommend Redneck Life for people who have a history with Life. It's not "good" on the "meaningful decisions" part (although there is more strategy than Life), they take all the annoying-to-gamers parts of Life and jump them over a gorge. Oh you landed on a Moonshine space? Roll on the Moonshine chart! You need a place to live, and you have to buy the first house on the House deck (which serves no in game purpose other than money sink)!

Any game that has twice as many debt tokens as cash tokens and uses teeth as VP is fine by me.

Copper Country is outstanding. It looks like a stodgy economic Euro with a boring theme, but it's got great replayability, some fine screwjob mechanics and of course, the afforementioned Pasty card.

My friends and I have been calling it Nerd Monopoly for a while. In the later days of 2nd Edition, they started integrating other GW properties into Talisman (Warrior Of Chaos early, and the Timescape expansion brought in Chainsaw Warrior along with a mix of other 40K stuff), so we figured it was open season to bring other games in. It was HeroScape before HeroScape. Snits, Awful LIttle Green Things, Twonky from RoboRally and one or two of the Arkham Horror characters showed up to join the quest for the Crown.

I really wanted to get into Netrunner mostly because I really dig the Android universe, but I just don't have the time to play the deckbuilding/deckbuying metagame (I only get maybe a few hours of gaming a month. The poster below talking about 3 hours a week sounds like a fever dream.)

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but the positional summoning mechanics remind me a lot of The Stars Are Right, which is even more tricksy because the pieces are mostly static but their relative positions are constantly being changed by the players.

I'm sorry it was too long for you. In general we start recording right after we order so people get a sense as to wait times, plus it gives us a little ramp up time. We generally get our food at right around the 10-15 minute mark, so it sounds like you just missed it!

It's called a "clouche" or a "cloche". Normally retails for around $50, hard to find locally, even in specialty and kitchen supply shops. I went through Amazon, but King Arthur Flour also has them.
