I was citing my experience, but you are correct, there are many different areas of technology.

What we don't know right now is the percentage of qualified US workers vs. those from out of the country. Additionally, I would also be interested not just in qualifications, but in effectiveness. I could very well be wrong in my assumptions, but so could the original poster be as well.

Re: The Tech Worker Shortage Doesn't Really Exist

I was hoping for additional information regarding the original question, not a couple of names. I will grant that these are impressive individuals, but they only represent a slice of the current tech sector.

Re: The Tech Worker Shortage Doesn't Really Exist

Please cite a source or experience to justify this: "Many of the tech sector's most talented people were not born in the US."

I have been working in IT or IT-related fields for over 10 years and have not found this to be true in my experience. That said, this could vary wildly depending on the area of the country you are located in.

Re: Dragon Age Redemption Episode 3 and Other Goodies

T-Shirt: XL Twitter: @matt_gowdy

Re: Lens redesign launch today

Very spiffy changes! It's unfair of us to demand perfection on the site and platform without understanding that changes take time. Likewise, how the community is handled at points like these is going to have a large impact on how changes are received. I can't help but feel that some of the current drama going on can be turned to a positive benefit.

It's not just a "do as we ask" sentiment going on here, there's a real opportunity for a larger dialog that just happens to pop out at perhaps an inopportune time. Then again, if opportunities showed up when we wanted them, they wouldn't be opportunities, merely options.

Re: New media cavegirl, That’s me

I totally get where you're coming from. Balancing life with technology is an interesting task. I guess some people probably think of me as too much of a technophile sometimes, but my cell phone is just a phone, I could never figure out how to program a VCR, and I go to bookstores just to walk around and see what's new. Plus, besides the tactile feel of books, I love the smell of freshly printed paper almost as much as I love older books and prints.

Honestly I fear for the next generation sometimes. Texting all day long, spoiled cause they got computers from an early age. Back in my day, I had a 486 with a 9Mb hard drive. My little sister is half my age and is planning on getting a netbook for Christmas.

I think technology will continue to evolve into our lives, but there are just some things that transcend the speed of tech. Some days, we just have to let go and walk away for peace of mind. Good thing the segway didn't actually change how we walk or we'd all be screwed.

I never understood the appeal of the iPhone. I can get behind the iPod Touch, I have one, it's great for games and videos and music and stuff, but who in their right mind would make a person use a flat screen as a phone? Not to mention that I dislike AT&T and everything they stand for, but that's besides the point.

DVR is one piece of technology that actually is worth it's weight in gold though. That and Hulu. What's even better is the ability to set up a DVR using Windows Media Center and a simple cable card. Gold in them there hills, I tell ya, gold.

The future... I always thought the future would end up a little bit more like the movie Idiocracy than anything else. Consumer technology constantly moves towards easier and easier things so over time, most people stop asking questions about how stuff really works. Then they stop trusting scientists cause they don't understand big words.

Oh crap that's going on today. *Runs for the hills*

The balance between technology and life is important. One is only supposed to help the other, not replace it.

Then again, I could just be rationalizing this because I'm broke and can't afford a new computer.

Re: Rad on the Web does the Ning thing

This is one of the many reasons I love this show. And ultimately it's one of the reasons that the internet is better than most TV shows in general. The ability for the audience to interact with the people behind the show, help out, and be listened to. Thank you very much for the opportunity to write in. :)

Now off to fill the new site with links and decorate the virtual lawn to welcome the new people. Are yard gnomes still considered tacky? How about pink flamingos? But that Beta is terrible. I'm pretty shocked that with that many people at FaceBook working on it, it turned out like that...

That's just... A really awful design. It's like Web 2.0 vomited on the page and FaceBook tried cleaning it up, but didn't use the big sponge. Okay, I'm done with gross metaphors, but I expected a better beta from a company that big.

Re: Top 10 reasons to see The Incredible Hulk

I saw the Hulk on Sunday and I like it much more than the first one. I like the way they skipped over doing another origin story and got straight into the chase stuff. I haven't read the comics, but I did watch the TV series as a kid, and this movie had kind of a similar feel in places to what I remember as well as some awesome fight scenes and pretty great performances.

It seems like Marvel is really starting to prep for an Avengers movie. I think they're also starting to get the hang of integrating their movies into the Marvel universe a bit more, which this movie did very well.

I also saw Kung Fu Panda this past weekend, if you haven't seen it yet, I recommend it. It's much better then the trailer lets on and the animation work is sweet.

Re: Micro-blog killed the long-form blog

I don't think that modes of communication ever truly die. Consider that people are still writing letters on occasion and using forums and BBS style sites and it could be noted that methods of communication may decline over time, but they do not die entirely (unless you communicate through laserdisk or betamax, but that's a whole other story).

With micro-blogging, it's great for status updates, but it's simplicity becomes a crutch whenever you try to do other things with it, like reference posts to search, use tagging, etc. It works well for social networking as it's basically short bursts of information (similar to social networks that are essentially short bursts of data tied to a human element).

I guess, I'd place money that the micro-blog will get more popular because it's easy to access, but there may come a time that either a better format or even a medium format arises, like say, combining Twitter with DaMN (DeviantART Message Network) and adding in some lightweight blogging tech like tagging, sharing, more content types, bumping the character limit up, etc. At least, that's my idea of what Twitter like services might be down the road.

Re: The Hugest Losers

Yeah, the weather here can be a little erratic. They say this state has two seasons: Winter and Road Construction. Lol.

Truth be told with the walks, I'm hoping when it gets closer to summer to do a longer version of what I did today. But until that time, I'll just keep hitting up the library (and lamenting their extremely outdated tech section).

Re: The Hugest Losers

I got my first walk of the week (4 miles) in today and hopefully weather permitting I'll be able to keep doing it each day (it snowed yesterday as I got outside).

Re: The Hugest Losers - Monday Weigh-In's...

Current Weight: 240.8

Note: My actual weight is less than that because I was fully clothed and did this after lunch. This weekend wasn't that great in terms of eating healthy, but each day is a new day and a new opportunity. I'm hoping it's nicer tomorrow (it started snowing when I went outside today) so I can get in a good walk.
