I've been on Twitter for some time, and hear what you say about using your real name.

As I have a rather long name, I use @Ozegold on Twitter and a number of other sites, with my real name, so that people can check me out!

Using real identity is important, otherwise it places contacts on social sites at a disadvantage!.

True,as social media has changed, the present 'A listers' have failed to change with it.

There's probably a natural arrogance that tends to go with being on an A list of any sort, but if those on it don't learn to flow with the tide, they go the way of the dinosaur!

I've found the mix of people, and their interests, on Plurk to be quite fascinating.

While the timeline might be off putting for some, it is conducive to conversation, and is probably one of the main reasons for its fast growing popularity.

The fact is that because of the size of the market, there is simply no way that any one service can cover the whole spectrum.

Everyone has different likes and dislikes, and the beauty of FriendFeed is that it links it all Thanks together.

Since Twitter has been having troubles, I have noticed a lot of people moving over to Plurk, though some don't seem comfortable with the degree of interaction there.

Obviously personal responsibility is always involved in these cases, but it seems to be the way of the world these days that SOMEONE has to be blamed.

2007 was a bad year for our kids on social networking sites, and especially Bebo, because of bullying.

We took action as parents and worked with their high school, and in another local case police were called in.

Two of the hardest things to achieve were convincing the parents of other kids that their offspring could do this, and then convincing our own not to respond in kind.

This is the crux of the matter - parental responsibility!

@shotals32 Sounds like an interesting story, though I might just wait until we're a bit further away from April 1 before I believe it!

Makes one wonder about Myspace if it really is true, as it's twice the size of Facebook.

Unfortunately it gets worse - the whole issue with data portability and Facebook is that when you submit your information to facebook, it becomes 'theirs'.

This is where Robert Scoble got into trouble when he tried to download his contacts. According to Facebook, they owned the information.

There are other sites such as bigsight.com that collect data as well, but that are not selling it at present.

I asked the Bigsight CEO whether they had plans to on sell the information in the same manner as Wink does, but received no answer. (We'd sent quite a few emails back and forth, and that was the only question that I remember remaining unanswered).

That was back in February.

To network on Facebook, or not to network on Facebook?

On balance, I would still join Facebook today, but would be very careful with what information that I gave out.

Of course, this goes for any other site as well.

Thanks for the kind comments (he says as he gets over the blushing bit).

I think that friends are friends, whether they are online or offline. The thing that is lacking with online friendships is the face to face contact, but that doesn't necessarily devalue them as far as I am concerned.

The old proverb says something like 'to have a friend, one needs to be a friend...' and this applies on the internet.

As far as I am concerned Teeg, you are indeed a friend, and so it is quite natural to offer help if it's needed.

While some regard friends that they meet on social networking sites or in chat rooms as part of a list to sell to, you are someone who is quite prepared to BE a friend.

Thank you for that, and I look forward to hearing that you've fully recovered.

Strangely, the rating hung around for a while, and my blog went from 0 to 2 at the same time. A while later my pr went to 3, and somewhere around the same time yours mysteriously appeared as a 3!

As Alice was wont to say, things get curiouser and curiouser...

I'm considering a similar experiment sometime as well to see what happens.

I have come to know a lot of people via online social networking, and have become 'real' friends with a few.

While taking care with personal details and so on, it presents a great way to get to know others.

The basic rule has to be to treat others the way we ourselves would like to be treated.

I've experienced this to a degree as well, although I hadn't actually befriended the person on Facebook, they had a crack at me in a group, and followed to my blog.

I've written about cyber bullying on my blog before, but the adult version is something that I hadn't thought about.

I agree with Charlie Robinson as well, this is something that FB can't fix on its own!

Just as offline community members need to participate in solving problems, online community members need to be a part of the solution as well.

What a lot of people don't realize is that their details can read like a jig saw puzzle. Something people can try for themselves to see how much info they have out there is to type their name into Google, and do a search for themselves.

Another, as you showed me once, is to type their username on various networking sites comes up - it can be really scary, especially in regard to birth dates and so on!

What I'd like to see is a comparison if you like, of how different sites work.

You've written before about how Stumbleupon is more than just a bookmarking site, and how people who are used to one site then try and use a new site the same way.

I've actually reduced the number of Adsense ads on my site, as a) I believe that they can be a distraction, and b) once a visitor clicks them, they are gone from my site.

In future I will be writing my own ads, and using them instead of Adsense.

A great post!

It beats me how sometimes people can be so creative in their writing, and then neglect such simple means of promotion.

My traffic from Stumbleupon has fallen off a bit since I hearing people complain about submitting one's own website - I stopped doing it until I can see which way things are going to go.

In the meantime, I use a Wordpress plugin which displays the latest post of bloggers who leave a comment - whuch in turn brings them back as well!

Why couldn't he have simply said 'My father supported...' rather than saying something that didn't match the public record.

Stretching the truth, and/or changing the story to suit different situations in order to gain an advantage simply shows lack of character.

Here in Australia, one politician made a gaffe by saying that policies that his party was campaigning on would change once they were in power...
