There was a while (sadly, no longer) when The Vampire Diaries was taking a really interesting look at female agency, particularly within a love triangle (I'm think particularly to the episode where Elena decided she didn't want to be a vampire back in... S2 i think? before they went and ruined everything with the sire bond certainly)). And I think Reign WANTS to commit to looking at female agency (which is why Catherine has ostensibly become the second lead and Greer and Aylee, whose stories were never as much about their agency, kind of fell to the back burner/to their death), but the show is afraid to fully go there, which is why its putting weight on the completely uninteresting love triangle. JUST GO FOR IT REIGN. IT'S WHAT WE'RE ALL HERE FOR. (That, and people getting banged out of windows).

Re: <i>Reign</i>: "The Darkness"

I think you mean "one false thrust" could kill her (but seriously everything about the Kenna storyline was super yucky and I hope the Kenna hate from last weeks' comments section is toned down this week)

Re: <i>Crisis</i> is too good to be bad and too bad to be good

Crisis was hands down the best pilot script I read last year, and maybe one of my favorites ever, but it did lose something in the transition to the screen. I definitely hope it can figure its shit out going forward, because if it can match the awesomeness of that pilot script, it would be one of the best shows on TV. But from the pilot it definitely wasnt there.

Re: <i>Reign</i>: "Dirty Laundry"

"You know nothing about being a compelling love interest, Bash Snow"

Re: <i>Reign</i>: "Dirty Laundry"

For me, nothing tops the withering stare she gave him when he dropped the body because it was heavy. Truly a thing of beauty.

ETA: Actually, I lied. It's tied with Catherine's reaction when Nostradamus told her about Olivia killing the priest "That's awful!... All along I haven't hated her nearly as much as everyone, but her working dem schemes was pretty great this week.

Also, Kenna's poorly timed requests are becoming one of my favorite Reign tropes. "The queen of England is dead? Well, I don't care, find me a husband." "Your sister just plummeted out a window? Oh, well, you're still gonna marry me right?" I half wished she could have gone with Mary to Ye Olde Abortion Clinic to ask the lady to check out a mole or s/t right as Mary figured out that Lola was carrying some half-elf offspring.

Re: Reign: "Royal Blood"

I'm just saying, what other show on tv has Richard Harrow masks, peasant blouses, vague orgies, servants getting their neck snapped, AND Anne of Green Gables just dominating shit? Club

Look, crazyforsushi, what I was actually saying there was that if you think Lauren or Dyson love Bo unconditionally, then you are having a selective memory towards the way those characters have been acting. Could I have said it with more tact? Probably. But this is in the internet, it's a tact-free zone. But it wasn't a personal attack at anyone who likes the relationship, it was a comment on the selective memory that people seem to have towards their faves.

And that's the whole thing, it's just subjective. I was looking for someone to explain what they see in Lauren that is so damn great. Apparently the answer is "taste is subjective". It's not really an answer as to what you see in her besides your own personal taste but whatever, arguing in internet comment sections is exhausting and lets just put this to bed. You like Lauren and I find her bland and monotonous. That's what makes a horse race.

Re: “Midnight Lamp” | Lost Girl | TV Club | TV | The A.V. Club

I'm replying to my own post here because it won't let me reply you directly, crazyforsushi. First off, I never personally attacked you (unless you happen to be Zoie Palmer), so I don't understand why you had to take it personal. As much as you might not want to believe it, I was legitimately asking for someone to explain their Lauren love, and your answer of "BECAUSE IM BETTER AT WATCHING THE SHOW THAN YOU" isn't really an answer, it's an insult to someone who disagrees with you. Ok, I get it, taste is subjective. Tell me something I didn't learn when I was a developing toddler.

In terms of Zoie being a good actress, I will admit that she has times where she shines, which just makes how overall boring I find Lauren more disheartening. The episode with the body swapping showed just how good Zoie can be when she is doing other things, so I don't understand why Lauren is so boring except a deliberate acting choice.

In terms of my "girl on girl loving" comment, that was more directed at the fandom in general, as ALL OVER THE PLACE, I have seen people yelling at others for not liking Bo/Lauren out of a place of homophobia, etc. and basically championing the relationship just because of the lesbian aspect. This is also what I meant by them screaming over everyone else. Unfortunately, screaming seems to be any fandom's resting state (and I'll admit I scream too), so this is an unresolvable problem. Again, I wasn't begrudging anyone the relationship, I was just asking for someone to explain why people seem to love it so much. But as you said, chemistry is subjective.

And if Ryan is a plot device, than SO IS EVERYONE ELSE. His presence there, yes, it may have been because Dyson, Lauren, and Kenzi were otherwise occupied. But does that make Dyson's presence when Lauren and Kenzi are otherwise occupied a plot device? Or any of the others in reverse scenarios? If everyone, including Ryan, highlights different parts of Bo's personality, then they are all plot devices. Or do they not count as plot devices since they are lead characters? If so, then what's the point of ever bringing in recurring characters?

In terms of Ryan's lasting nature, a friend of mine actually spoke to Jay Firestone at Comic-Con and he said that he and the writers all loved Ryan and wanted to do more with him but fans reactions to him dictated his departure. The "anything but" of his potential has to do more with the character assassination to come than anything else, and that ties directly back to a fandom who won't stand for anything getting in the way of their ships (Dyson and Lauren stans alike).

Oh, and please tell me where oh where I said that my opinions were fact. I was asking for someone to explain it to me. Does that sound like I was making a factual statement? No. I was trying to engage in dialogue. I never said my opinions are facts, but apparently from your tone, you thinks yours is.

Re: “Midnight Lamp” | Lost Girl | TV Club | TV | The A.V. Club

Ok, so this may sound flippant but it's a serious question: Can you or someone else please explain to me WHY people like Lauren? I honestly do not understand it. Most of the time she's in a scene, she's like a lump, never giving off anything into the scene, just existing. Her entire relationship with Bo seems to be coming from Bo's part, as Zoie Palmer's complete failure at giving any sort of intonation to most of her line readings leaves me wondering why the hell Bo gives a damn about her. Her entire relationship with Bo seems to be predicated on Bo reacting to her, and that sort of complete and utter passivity is just not flattering. Or, when Lauren is not being passive, she is either whining to Bo or "being heroic", but those scenes of heroism are never riveting because again, Palmer's lack of giving any sort of oomph to Lauren robs those moments of any greatness.

In terms of the romantic angle, I still don't see what is so great about Lauren. Do y'all like her just because it's some lady on lady loving? Because, let me tell you, there's better lady on lady loving out there. Even Ringer's "SURPRISE LESBIANS!" twist seemed to have more chemistry than Bo and Lauren. And also, lets not forget here, Lauren is not exactly a saint in the romance department. First she was seducing Bo on the Ash's orders, then she was beginning a relationship with Bo despite her coma girlfriend, who she apparently cares enough about to self herself into slavery, but not enough to not cheat on her behind her comatose back. When you factor in how incredibly mishandled the Nedia (don't even get me started on how Lauren can't pronounce Nadia, her own girlfriend's name, right but everyone else can) storyline becomes and how wishy-washy it turns Lauren, I just don't get it. And this isn't coming from the point of view of someone who wants her with Dyson either. Bo/Casual Sex is my OTP. But if your whole thing is about Lauren (or Dyson)'s unconditional love of Bo, then a) you haven't been actually paying attention to those characters actions and b) how did you not respond to Ryan's two speeches to Bo about how and why he was in awe of her.

In terms of Ryan being a plot device, well, no. A plot device is someone who exists solely to move the plot forward. Seeing as, over the course of his episodes, Ryan actually has a bearing on Bo's character, I don't think he qualifies as a plot device. And if you do want to go there, let's look at the cavalcade of interesting plots that Ryan could have posed: Bo is unaligned, so why the hell does she only cavort with light fae? Could there be a place for her unaligned self in the dark world just as in the light? Are there gradations of evil in the dark world just as there are in the light? The world of the dark fae is just BEGGING to be explored and Ryan could have been a perfect entry point. And further, Ryan made it clear that he was open to a no strings attached situation with Bo and, my god, wouldn't it be refreshing to see an independent Bo, not laden down by the love triangle, and what that would be like?

There was just so much potential with Ryan but unfortunately, due to the Lauren stans in the fandom who love to scream over everyone else, we'll never know where it could have gone. And that's a shame.

Re: “Midnight Lamp” | Lost Girl | TV Club | TV | The A.V.
