Because if this would be possible, it would mean that we could share 'real' immersive environments in real time.

Re: Big Apple : Glass in de sneeuw

fancy indeed.

Re: Time for our personal learning environments #PLENK2010

thank you!

Re: ‘Second Life is for older people’

I don't think that we talk about iFads here, in the sense of a "fad" as a very temporary phenomenon. Millions, then billions of people will have constant access to the enormous knowledge and connective possibilities of the internet. They won't have to go to some special place in their home where the desktop stands, they won't have to carry around a computer as we know it. The connection will be wearable (on their clothes or bodies), can be activated instantly or even gives the possibility to intervene spontaneously. I do realize it also sounds scary - but it is a fundamental change, not a fad.

Re: Korea Launches Fight Against Game & Net Addiction

Interesting... I do understand on her emphasis on the educational possibilities of gaming mechanics, but the TED-video did not offer any critical analysis of the gaming industry and the presuppositions of many games. But then again, I guess that was not the purpose of her presentation.

Re: Playing viral games looking for… authenticity?

So glad to see you here again, Fleep. I feel rather guilty for not participating in Chilbo stuff right now, but my mother is very ill and I try to be with her in this last period of her life. I somehow manage to to do my job though (I hope) and also to participate in some SL activities such as the great discussions we have with We Are the Network and of course there is Metanomics as well.

See you soon, dear Fleep.

Re: Those complicated Russian media

I should have pointed out that the actual workshop (which takes three days) is organized not by Ria Novosti but by FNR (independent radio stations) and EurAsia Media (helping smaller and independent media).

Re: Pics from Moscow, metro and real time web workshop and seminar

yes, I'll elaborate on that later on

Re: Mindmapping real time possibilities for bloggers, journalists

patience... Can social media be used to spread half-truths and lies? Of course, just as the mainstream media formats can become tools for manipulation. But they can also be used to uncover the truth, to talk about real problems and issues and even to formulate solutions.

Re: Using social media and virtual worlds for news gathering

Thank you for your great comment, Joel! I think if we do this for We Are the Network, we should open up the discussion, and ask the question how we, the people formerly known as the audience, would want to organize news gathering in our neighborhoods, cities, virtual worlds... What kind of relation do we want with newspapers and professional news sites, what can people do to engage themselves in the news gathering, how do we want news presented...

Re: Virtual worlds vs. other social media: a matter of dealing with hard choices?

I should check them out.

Re: Virtual worlds vs. other social media: a matter of dealing with hard choices?

yes, you're right about IMVU (just looked it up). So the question remains: is it just a matter of marketing? Habbo and IMVU are more oriented towards teenagers (correct me if I'm wrong), Runescape is a gaming environment.

Metaplace at the start was very open-ended, and maybe the major problem was that it did not target specifically kids/teens or adults, nor did it feature prominent games.

So maybe only Second Life can get away with being an open-ended, not specifically gaming oriented environment for young and old alike (but mostly "older" people), while other worlds would have to decide whether to promote specific games and appeal to specific age groups?

Re: Virtual worlds vs. other social media: a matter of dealing with hard choices?

Good question. But are those three worlds created by the users, or by designers and content creators appointed or selected by the owners of those worlds?

Re: Blue Mars announces Flash multimedia integration tools – more competition for Second Life

see also my next post :)

Re: Google Wave for collaborative blogging and conference backchannels

Sure Joel, I know the discussion will be balanced and open as always... The nice thing about these discussions is that we are not aiming for one single conclusion, every participant goes home with her or his own conclusions.
Unfortunately I won't be able to attend :((, I've to attend a meeting & dinner in meatspace...

Re: Disruptive technology adoption is a uphill battle

hm.
