I always chalked the attention up to what seemed to be near-relentless touring, their growth as songwriters, and Patterson's general personality and gregariousness. Pretty much any label can put even a minimum amount of effort behind a band like that and get good results. (And let's not forget the roles of manager and publicists when it comes to promoting a band - although I don't know how much those roles were handled by the label in this case.)

Writers like to talk to interesting subjects, and they like hooks to hang their stories onto. Patterson seems to have a good conversational/storytelling ability such that a writer would love to interview him. As for the hooks, well, Patterson comes from an interesting musical legacy. And I always assumed it was Southern Rock Opera that first started getting the band more attention - and that was a great hook: An "alt-country/rock" concept album (ostensibly) about Skynyrd, but with lots to say about the South. Add all that up and it really doesn't take much to lead the press by the nose.

A label can help, but I really think the Truckers earned what they've got.

Plus did you hear they have underwear? Creepy, American Apparel underwear that Dov Charney probably wears while he hangs out in front of middle schools? So take that.

And if I rocked as hard as the Athens band does, I'd have underwear, too. They deserve it!

If there's one thing I've always said about Cat Stevens, it's that he just wasn't hot enough. I've also written a foot-high stack of slash fic about Cat Stevens having sex with Boone from Lost, and what their resulting offspring would look like. It's like Jesus has seen me weep myself to sleep and finally answered my prayers.

I think I know about a band looking for a bassist, and Mr. Nelson just might fit the bill.

Not that I'm into dragging this out beyond the limited shelf-life of a "blog discussion," but I have to say that you're creating what you think I mean by "Southerness" out of whole cloth. At no point did I say that REM should or ever did sound "Southern Rock." And you might have noticed the repeated references to Faulkner, who one could argue was more Joycean and artistic than, say, Erskine Caldwell, who might fit better into this odd "dur dur Sawthren Rawk" mold that *you* are trying to stuff this discussion into, not me.

That fact that you see the music scene as either "Around the Sun" or "southern Rock/alt-Country" only seems to prove that you know far less about what's going on in this town than anyone else in this discussion.

Sorry, I didn't mean "old" in a pejorative sense... That is kind of surprising - you'd think the 40 Watt would be run by big MP fans.

I still haven't heard much Dead Confederate - largely because what I've read about them hasn't made them sound worth checking out. I'll get around to them eventually, but they are low priority at the moment.

1) I want to get people active.

2) I want bands to choose what song represents their band, so no one can say I chose an "unrepresentative" song.

3) In the same vein, I want them to have a choice in whether or not OK gets to spout off about their band.

4) I want to create an opportunity for me to get outside of my comfort zone when it comes to listening to music. Also, I want to avoid people claiming I'm only choosing favorites (which is probably what I would do)

5) And as TDJ said - "productively lazy." I am lazy and/or do not have the time to hunt down new music on my own. I barely have time to listen to the music I already know I like. So bring it to me.

Also - Myspace sucks. it's painful to use. bands, get the fuck off of there. Invest the $50-$80/year to have your own website and post some mp3s there. The shit you people are putting up on Myspace make my fucking browser crash more than anything else.

Well, those guys are getting old, so maybe they don't want to headline anyway... Get some sleep...

As much prestige as headlining has, I'd much rather be second (of three) on the bill - you get more audience than the first opening act (and possibly even more than the headliner), and you still have some time to enjoy the rest of the night when you're done.
