MDV - I'm mostly interested because in many ways, Beverly is the closest city in Mass. you can compare with Gloucester as far as population, school enrollment, and "average" income.

AR - it was not a "citywide" arts festival, it was The Gloucester Public School District Arts Festival. Very specific.
If your talking about the city-wide band, that is another matter.
When the MCAS results come out, and if the scores are up at GPS, will that be because of the GCACS or despite?

Notime - did you miss the part about this is normal practice in districts that have charter schools? I guess the governing bodies in Foxborough, Framingham, Chelsea, Lawrence and Fitchburg are also snarky. Looks like this might be pretty common.

Peter, I think DeeDee may have been refering to the fact that GPS is not kicking out students who may already be participating in programs, just not allowing more. I do think that is fair.

in re: residents with children - Wikipedia says "There were 12,592 households out of which 27.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them". So about 3 quarters of the households don't have a stake in the schools in the form of kids. BUT - schools are very important to the community, no matter how you slice it. - Edited, sorry for mis-wording it.

Without the scale, the cops might not have gone with "intent to distribute". Mass. passed the possession law, remember? That was to let "kids being kids" off the hook. Tolerance is one thing, but children need limits. And I guess the police in this case felt these two were over the limit.

It's also interesting that the city is run by "Amateurs/unqualifieds" and yet we have a CAO who is a "professional" (master's degree in public administration), claimed in 2007 to be a fiscal conservative, and, if I'm not mistaken, has one of the highest salaries in the city.

Um, NickMichaels - that's not a very good metaphor at this point. Hundreds of thousands of mortgages were allowed to people who probably shouldn't have gotten them but did, and they ARE having their houses taken away from them.
Absolutely the culprits in this should be culpable, but at the same time, it is the GPS that are being shorted because of a breach of trust. And, unfortunately, it is the GCACS that will suffer if the judge finds for the plaintiffs.
