As for now those of us who so passionately followed them and purchased their product in the glory days are still waiting to see what is going to happen when their parent company finally figures out that they are destroying one of the most credible names in surveillance.

A few months back I was at a trade show and an old MR rep introduced himself to me and said he was looking for work, he then explained to me that he had just been laid off from Pelco after being with them for over 15 years. Of course their senior management is probably making changes for what they perceive as better yet in Clovis, CA there seems to be a failure to realize what the industry really needs. In the past Pelco lead the charge to be the best and now its just floundering along.

John.....please help us lead the charge to get Pelco back to its glory days.

NiNeR

Re: Riskiest Companies 2009 - BRS Labs and TimeSight

John,

It is important that reporters and industry media tell the good and bad of every situation, which you have done above. If I was a member of Senior Management in either BRS Labs or TimeSight instead of going on the defensive about the article you wrote I would set up a public product demonstration and prove you wrong. What most people in this industry don't understand about this article is that is really is not about technology, it is highlighting a leadership issue within both of these organizations.

There is plenty of VC and First tier financing in this industry and with the right investment firm behind you there is real opportunity to bring value to the marketplace in todays economic climate. As highlighted above companies like Covi and Ipix burned through their capital and both had good products. Most recently Steelbox went bankrupt, which was a shocker to me considering the posative reviews that they had garnered, with that said just because a company has received 50 million dollars in startup money does not make their product or more importantly their management team viable.

They (BRS Labs and Timesight) need to get out in front of integrators and get a few projects under their belt, come back to you once the sites are complete and provide data to hopefully prove you wrong.

For some reason, that will probably not happen.............

Regards,

NiNeR

Re: Should IT Use DVRs for Video Surveillance Storage?

Hi John,

I apologize for not posting in awhile.....so I read Intransa's "White Paper" and about 5-6 pages into it thought to myself, why am I reading this? Why can't companies in our business teach others, perform research and present it in a scholastic manner?

What if you were to give a presentation in college and during the middle of lecture you mentioned that your sponsor was xyz company? It's un-thinkable, so why in our industry do companies want to take their already questionable research and litter it with product advertisements?

Overall, the content of Intransa's White paper made sense, yet they ruined the validity of the research by self promoting their products. Then you have to go in and tear them apart when there was some decent nuggets of information being presented. Why can't there be a middle ground in research and development information presented on this site, in fact John you should make a new
rule for White Papers/research articles etc. and require that they cut out the pork.

Regards,

NiNeR

Re: IP Video Close to Standards???

John,

The IP Video standard is relatively the same thing as VHS and Beta back in the eighties, one is going to win out and the others will fall. Fortunately, the more progressive manufacturers of IP cameras have already made concessions for this supposed issue. For those who do not know, writing any of todays standards into a camera software is not a challenge at all.

  Niner

Re: Which Video Surveillance Companies are Most at Risk?

John,

I read the whole report and overall it was spot on and well researched, sometimes people in our business lack the reasoning the examine the bigger picture because they look at a companies overall financial picture and dont really understand the thing behind the thing.

There is a few major players in the IP Video market that are downright sexy on the balance sheet but they do not have a lions share of the market and they are globally recognized brands. So goes your point with Cisco, they will flood dollars into R&D yet will they have the gumption to hire outside management from proven product lines within the Surveillance Industry? The answer is probably not and there lies the problem, they will budget millions and possibly turn a profit but the monetary amount will not be attractive enough for them to push harder.

We witness this daily with Mega-Corporations in our business like Sony and Panasonic. Either of them could buy out Axis or any of the major IP camera players tomorrow and have plenty of money to purchase Milestone and Onssi as well. So why have they not done this yet, it is the same story Cisco will unfold into, each of those Mega Corporations listed above makes Billions of dollars elsewhere, what's another 500 million?

Surveillance is petty cash to them and a side project at best.

NiNeR

Re: Pelco Cuts Costs and Lays Off 1% of Employees

Recession strikes again!

This is bad news for those 19 employees, especially during the Holidays. My first stab at their situation is for them to take the cash they made from selling their corporate jet and give a nice severence package to the employees affected by their recent layoffs.

NiNeR

Re: IP Cameras for the Masses: Contrasting ACTi and Axis : IP Video Market Info

I understand your point, with that said you have every right to be upset. ACTi does change its camera models almost every year causing frusteration to installers who are used to a manufacturer that puts out a line and keeps it that way for 2-3 years.

While I'm a big Arecont fan and really like Bassler, ACTi does have more mega-pixel cameras out than most of the competition and likes to stay ahead of the larger manufactures such as Panasonic and Sony that move slow.

Unfortunately, when you started talking about the PTZ cameras you lost me again....are you taking a real hard look at the ACTi and Axis PTZ camera lines? If you are really a "field guy" then maybe you would have noticed some interesting things in relation to your above comments.

So, to wrap up your summary and close the arguments you present I recommend you start touring factories in Asia. Once you learn the inside scoop on each of the camera lines you mention in your above comments, you will quickly learn that this industry is small and those that really know about the hardware side would find multiple fallacies in your arguement.

NiNeR

PS: The business line thinking being done by the large distributors is this, they "ADI", "Northern Video", "Anixter" etc. have product teams that fly across the world and tour factories numerous times throughout the year. What they have on their shelf is the cream that has risen to the top!

Re: Examining the Impact of the Recession

John,

For some companies in the surveillance industry there has been a significant growth spurt that has happened in the past year. Look for these companies to continue their growth in 2009 and beyond as they keep their eyes focused on the longer term picture in the marketplace and do not get caught up in the latest fads.
On the IP surveillance side look at the companies who understand their role in the market and cater to the broadest clientel range, there is 2-3 companies that should come to mind that fit this description. Solid sales figures and steady growth are good indicaters of tomorrow and evidence of proper prior planning. As you have mentioned before, there will be a few IP software companies who will not make it past 2009 and other supporting product manufacturers who will struggle or close their doors all together.

As for available capital in the market there is a good amount out there for companies who have 10 million or more in revenue a year and need 20 million + loan, they can get it at a favorable rate. Getting startup capital from angel investors at favorable rates and fair contract terms is where the problem is. Many of these companies who will go under in the next two years were set up to fail once they signed the initial loan documents.

To make matters worse once that money was transferred to the corporate account it's amazing how many italian leather chairs and expensive furnishings, 50k trade show booths and important capital consuming needs arise. The companies who are going to make it through this recession and not feel the hit are the ones who understand how to manage their bottom line and use the recession to their advantage.

NiNeR

Re: Steelbox Out of Business

Steelebox had a good product, it was cutting edge. For many of us in the biz we understand that many clients have a difficult time understanding the well known software vendors products out there and with steelebox they were taking technology to a new level.

John, you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned Steelebox probably was spending too much money on marketing and sales in the beginning. Having been in the biz for awhile I laugh everytime a new company without any sustaining revenue funds six figure booth space and accommodations at ASIS and ISC West.

Steelebox had a great product and a near perfect name, its a shame they decided to squander that type of opportunity away.

NiNeR

Re: IP Cameras for the Masses: Contrasting ACTi and Axis : IP Video Market Info

Srini,

There is a few holes in your claim, #1 ACTi does not manufacture analog cameras, at all. If there were failures on the scale you listed above then the big players in the distribution side of the marketplace would run the other way. According to the mega distributors such as Northern Video and ADI, ACTi sales are growing quickly and not slowing down.

As for your experience, there is probably reason for you to be concerned about these issues you are having. Offhand, I can see that your lack of basic sentence structure and incorrect spelling would cause communication problems for everyone you conduct business with.

Once you get your education squared away please try these camera manufacturers, D-Link and Vivotek. Along with AXIS, they are the biggest competitors of ACTi.

NiNeR

Re: IP Cameras for the Masses: Contrasting ACTi and Axis : IP Video Market Info

Todd,

Personally, if you are losing 25k on a job then it is obvious that you as a System Integrator did not understand how to use the ACTi camera line. While I aim for the higher end camera lines because of my appreciation of the multi-magapixel technology ACTi does make a solid camera. They are distributed by too many the biggest players in this marketplace for any of your claims to be true. The big distributers that carry them such as ADI and Northern Video would of chewed them up and spit them out by now.

Re: Should Manufacturers Sell Direct to End Users?

John,

One of the bigger issues not addressed here is the fact that end-users want service and someone to talk to face to face. The biggest distributors in the Low Voltage industry are counter service type facilities such as ADI and Tri-Ed which shelve popular products in their showroom for their customers and Anixter, CSC and Accu-tech which offer a will call type of setup where you phone, e-mail, fax in your PO and you can pick it up at your local branch "will call" window.

If System Integrators need these types of labor intensive facilities I am not sure the end user will be savvy enough to make a decision, go online and order a product unless they have had experience with that product in the past. For the most part the System Integrator will make the first sale and introduce the end user to a specific product, once the end user is comfortable with that product and has been taught enough IP through hours of tech calls with the Systems Integrator then typically the end user start hunting for a deal via the internet.

Once the end user starts shopping a certain brand then that it when the in house channel protection needs to kick in at the manufacturers level. There is not a company so big that they do not know where every dollar is coming from in our industry, if a end user starts calling around and shopping a product then the manufacturers rep or territory manager will start getting calls about that end user, it is then up to that rep or salesperson to track the project down and ensure proper channel flow. You will notice in our industry the "Trunk Slammer" sell to anyone, they are easy to recognize too. If you as a Systems Integrator are buying an IP camera from a manufacturer who has no national distribution partner then chances are you need to run the other way. There is a reason for this and when you deal with a so called "Manufacturer" who will then turn around and give you every excuse in the book on why they are not nationally distributed please understand this: They do not have the support infrastructure, financial ability and/or qualities you as an SI need to protect your sales channel.

In the future ordering will become almost 100% via the internet yet there will be channel unity because System Integrators are an important part of the distribution channel link. Do not think that the "Real' players in this market do not have a grasp on this, the larger manufacturers will shield the System integrators from the end user from buying direct. The manufacturers do not want to carry the net credit terms for these companies and are not changing this anytime soon.

I have to disagree with MDI's article, they are a good company yet to small a Systems Integrator to guage the market in this fashion.

NiNeR
