You have obviously thought this through thoroughly and I understand your concerns about cheaters and also that it is important for it to be user-friendly. I wasn't exactly suggesting that you adopt this approach. I was thinking out loud how, in theory, such a system would work fairly. I appreciate the fact that you want this competition to be absolutely fair.

Re: My, oh my

Hi Giles, I voted on the National Geographic Photo Competition yesterday and it got me thinking about our system. I wonder if you have compared our system with the average score system, which they use. I have had high averages, but with less votes, which obviously did not fare so well. I am keeping tabs on the winner's breakdown of their scores and votes and have noticed that their averages aren't sometimes that high. Don't you think that a fairer system exists? It doesn't seem totally fair that a score of 20 from 20 voters who gave one star each, could result in a higher place than a score of 19, from, e.g. 3 votes of 5 and 1 vote of 4. Maybe the only real fair system would be to make it compulsory to vote on each and every entry, or not at all. I have no idea how this problem could be resolved fairly, and I know there have been countless discussions on this topic, so it is a tough one. Maybe a "marriage" between the two systems will be a good compromise.
