The drawings: self-portrait and study for R.side of park and the painting of the Ploughman are my favorites (#1,6,10).

Raphael Soyer, the American painter, was one of several older artists interviewed in the 1990s by "American Artist" Magazine, who were asked what advice they had for younger artists. Soyer said, "Live a long time.". True true. (Am thinking of Louise Nevelson and
Louise Bourgeois)

On "success": we who are artists, are going to do the art whether or not it's "acclaimed" or bought. Art is an itch that must be scratched. Have been checking in periodically. On Kucinich, I do recall his comment when voting YES for the bad bill for health legislation (on Dem.Now?) that he had to support his president... I voted for Kucinich in the Dem. primary (absentee ballot for homebound disabled list) the day before he quit, in 2008. How much has Kucinich ruined his creds since that vote/statment?

  And BRAVO on your Izzy!

Re: Follow Democracy Now!'s on-the-ground Reports from Haiti

following Dem.Now the "old fashioned" way: radio and online. The topic has been nicely covered by you and DemocracyNow. Those of us who have been following this story from the first news of the massacre are not surprised, particularly if we are of "a certain age" (i.e. with fairly good memories), which can compensate for expertise. I smile.

Re: National Healthcare agenda and NY Impacts (Gotham Gazette, Nov 09, 2009)

More like a Potemkin Village than "overhaul", unless you consider more moving money upward as "overhaul", which may be accurate. Dennis Kucinich on DemocracyNow this morning is excellent on why he voted "NO" and how we need to work for and how to get to Single Payer. www.democracynow.org The idea of forcing people to buy insurance, like in MA is absurd, as is giving big bucks to bad health insurance industry boggles the mind....except it's part of the bailout pattern begun a year ago Sept 2008. I heard one where he says he "made community college more affordable". I'm told by a CUNY staffer that the NYC City Council blocked Bloomberg's budget cuts to CUNY community colleges. It's a weird stretch to call that making community colleges "more affordable" because he was blocked in cutting funds.

There's barely criticism of Bloomberg now and nearly nil since he took office. Very sad.

Re: Bloomberg and the Budget: A Story in Three Parts (Gotham Gazette, October 2009)

As one "man in the street" put it: If Bloomberg was so smart, how come he didn't predict the big financial disaster and protect the city.
Too much of this article, especially the opening paragraphs, sound like a big
love letter to the mayor. I ask one question, that everyone has been asked in the past and can ask themselves again,
"Are you better off today than you were 4 years ago?" Why does Bloomberg
"get a pass" as he cuts services, has an antitenant Rent Guidelines Board, and spends lots of money trying to convince people he's "the answer"?
He seems worried - and must be a bit scared if he's using Rudy G. to campaign with him.

Re: Another Term Awaits (Gotham Gazette, October 19, 2009)

The amount of criticism in the corporate media has been miniscule. Bloomberg is a billionaire bully. I listened to the debate on radio. Thompson seemed to thread carefully between criticism and being noncontroversial. I was shocked when Bloomberg out-Rudy-ed Rudy G. in getting Sept.11th into the "debate" quicker than Rudy ever has. Amazing.

And having Rudy G. "on the campaign trail" for him, strongly indicates that Bloomberg assumes black voters will automatically vote for Thompson. Cynical and a bit scared that his big bucks for advertising might not do it alone.

Finally, the October 22 Coalition Against Police Brutality have their annual rememberance of people killed by NYPD. Bloomberg's record in re police policy is not pretty.
"Building Bridges" (have their own website), has a show on WBAI, archived for 90 days, and last Monday evening, 7pm, had guests doing a report card on Bloomberg's Administration. "Building Bridges" is a labor report but included related: housing, education, etc.
www.october22.org/ for a list of NYPD killed since Amadou Diallo - and still counting
under Bloomberg.

The NYCLU writes of work they've done on the illegal "stop and frisk" by NYPD under
Bloomberg, who is rather secretive about releasing information. www.nyclu.org

Re: Re-enfranchising New Yorkers (Gotham Gazette, October 5, 2009)

Didn't Cynthia McKinney lose her primary in GA because non-partisan voting meant that Republicans could vote in what would have been a Dem primary?

Re: NY Times Whines That 'Rethink Afghanistan' Film is Not "Balanced"

Hi. The first paragraph is a thing of beauty, Jeremy Scahill. A note from the "language"-of-disability-lady (moi): could you say, "disabled" where you have "deformed"?
