So the ableism inherent in this attack on JJ is especially troubling for me, and for millions of people with chronic disabling illnesses: Her symptoms improve? She must have been faking the whole time. Her symptoms fluctuate? Evidence that she ‘keeps changing her story.’ A new diagnosis? ‘Red flags’, apparently, as opposed to the reality that chronic illnesses most often come in twos or threes (or tens), as opposed to in isolation. Her symptoms worsen? She’s obviously exaggerating now, “playing it up” for ... whatever it is abled people think we get out of our illnesses - attention is the thing I've heard most often, without the acknowledgment that that attention is most often negative.

If you think we haven’t heard it before, you’re wrong. That we haven’t experienced this kind of hatred and doubt and disbelief from family and friends and doctors and significant others and strangers on the street -or online-, you are mistaken. This has just served as a very public reminder that our lives and experiences are fodder for mockery, and that sharing our suffering, or our successes, online just leaves us open to shaming and slander. To constant bullying and attacks.

I’ve spent the entire week arguing the reality of living with chronic illness with ableist assholes on Twitter and Instagram, and I know it’s a tiny percentage of the hate she’s been getting. I don’t blame her for putting her Twitter on private.
