Democratic deficits and Tories in the same sentence would be the real anchronism. Harper hasn't got a democracy bone in his body. He's too busy trying to kick sand in rhe face of any 99 ound weakiling he can find.
Harper has nominated many candidates with out riding approval or contests. And since when do laws or constitutions mean anything to tories. The fixed election dates are in your own party platform. Hypocrisy is thy name.

well Stephane was right in your backyard last Thursday and the sell out crowd there didn't act like tories on a sinkng ship. The green shift program is much better than the shaft we will all get from Harper bu tthen again he isn't going to win.

No odds from me. you were the front runner so you should give me odds. At 34% right now and dropping the will ose many many seats. I say the Cons well come out of Quebec and the Maritimes with less than 10 seats.

The people of Canada will decide and not the press. Good try Stephen but it looks like Steve can't handle the pressure when it comes down to the crunch. His numbers are falling like shooting star right now. I would be some po'ed if I knew my contributuons to the party were spent on a strtegy of insulting the opponent for two years and he beat you fair and square on election day.

I believe that the cons will dump Harper in due time and sooner than later but well before the next election once a new lib leader is in place. They will not want the libs to get head start on them.
Harper has had 3 kicks at the can and could not deliver a majority. His party has a fragile lead in Ontario seats and they have no talnet on the front benches which indicates furute problems. his backfire in queebc has other implicatons that could make national unity an issue again. Charest conveniently became a Quebec nationalist in order to ward off Harper's advances and like the last tory endeavour with Meech lake they continue to misunderstand that province.

While I was no fan of Preston while in government he does have democratic principles which I wish he would pass on to PMSH who has no such delusions. Preston and another elder from the Libs should be tasked to educate people on their democratic rights and obligations to vote. we do need more politcial dialogue here and not attack ad style government.
I know this will not happen under Harper but election financing as rearranged by Chretien is still not done properly. I think all financing should be left to the parties and just have it well dccumented as to origin of the funds. Poiitical donations are tax deductible and many more people would donate as well as corporate sponsors that would make our main parties much more aware of their constituencies.
The left is not really in disarray but truly in need of someone who can motiivate the third and fourth parties to coalesce around them. Its time for the NDP to stop being Liberal pretenders and either join them or go back to their protest roots. While Jack Layton may have won more seats that last time out it was simply through the magic of vote splitting in most ridings.
The greens will ultimately loom as a right wing competitive to the currtent cons as their overall policy manual is very right wing at least economically speaking.
Duceppe is done as well as Dion as he can now go out as a winner and collect his large federal pension. That leaves Quebec wide open as Harper and the cons,except for a brief Mulroney honeymoon have never understood Quebec. The Libs ,if they are smart, will pick a Quebec friendly leader and force their policies more clearly to the center.

hollinm, the conservatives have harper and while he won two elections he has run in three of them and not acheived a majority yet and is unlikely to do so ever. Chretien was drafted not as a saviour but as a good politician and he won three, count em, majority governments and didn't break a sweat doing so.He had the same conditions as Harper had with a deeply divided opposition.

The Liberals will be back and will win a majority after the cons really screw up the economy. Tell us in a year or so how smart those GST cuts were.

It is very enligthening to read the comments here. It was only 15 short years ago that the Tories were basically wiped off the electoral map.

They were resurrected by a western right winger named Preston Manning and then had the misfortune to continue their lost arrogance by naming a leader who listens to no one but his own inner team. If people call that grass roots democracy this country is surely in trouble.

The Liberals have their problems for sure. They will recover and once they do will win elections once again. They are still the only party to have survived intact since confederation

Running elections and pre elections on negative ads and personal attacks does nothing for this country and that is all the Tories can now claim as their heritage. Dion was a decent leader and had some very good ideas on governence and is a passionate Canadian with no hard and fast ideology running through his veins. He believes in a fair fight also based on ideas and not negative personal attack ads and refused to get into that game at his own peril.

Your party could not increase its % of the popular vote, lost actual votes, and have not enaged Canadians in any meaningful way. Don't let your own arrogance get in the way. Dump Harper and get some real democracy in your party or it will go down the tubes once again.

its very heartening to see our American brethern elect a liberal democratic government that will run all branches of the federal apparatus in the US. This will help clean up the economy and remind the Canadians who voted for Harper there is a much better way. Dumb populist economics are doomed to failure.
