Letters are pronounced differently in every language, so a somewhat common pronunciation makes it easier.

Re: 20 Latin Phrases You Should Be Using

If they're doing it to keep the people too happy to really pay attention to the other things the government is doing.

Re: 20 Latin Phrases You Should Be Using

When we lived in Germany, we attended a Roman festival in Trier (the capital of the most northern part of the Roman empire, and FILLED with well preserved, Roman ruins), and the Germans called it Brot und Spiel, which translates to bread, and fun.
Also, doesn't ludos mean games, not circenses?

Re: 20 Latin Phrases You Should Be Using

Clever.

Re: 20 Latin Phrases You Should Be Using

Latin is pretty much phonetic. If there is a letter, you pronounce it. The V is pronounced like a W, or U, and the C is always hard, like K. Latin originally only had 23 letters. There was no J, U, or W. IVLIVS (Julius), but they originally had no J sound, so it would be pronounced you-lee-us, though some argue that it would be eye-lee-us. Clear as mud?

Re: 20 Latin Phrases You Should Be Using

Yes! We love Latin, because if a letter is there, you say it! Of course V is pronounced like a W.

Re: 20 Latin Phrases You Should Be Using

Yes, but it is also the basis of many of the romance languages. My son was homeschooled for 7 years, and we studied Latin. He's in a private school now (8th grade), and all students must take Spanish. His foundation in Latin, has really helped him understand Spanish, as many of the words are almost identical.

Re: 20 Latin Phrases You Should Be Using

Yep! cagara fortuna, or excrementum fortuna are better, and closer to shit out of luck.

Re: 20 Latin Phrases You Should Be Using

Excretus means enlarged. Excrementum, or Feces would actually be the better word.

Excrementum Ex Fortuna translates to Excrement (shit) from fortune. cagare fortuna, or excrementum fortuna, are better ways to put it.

Re: 20 Latin Phrases You Should Be Using

That translated to happy fault, so...maybe?

Re: 20 Latin Phrases You Should Be Using

That's not nice. Many people have current, valid passports, but don't know the correct pronunciations. We lived in Europe for 11 years, and there are many Europeans who can't correctly pronounce Latin. I've even heard Ecclesiastical Latin mispronounced in a cathedral.

Re: 20 Latin Phrases You Should Be Using

Someone else who knows this! Do we have nothing better to do with our time?
Yay on the glucose test! I only had to do the 1 hour one and the stuff the Germans use tastes like cranberry juice! It was yummy! I would love to go to PEI too! I also don't do "diet" ANYTHING and (shhh) watch Dr. Phil. ;) Oh, and I used to play the flute (not well). Nice to meet you!

Re: Moving Day!

Nice house! I'm jealous of your house in Germany too! When we moved back to HD, they weren't letting anyone except 0-6 and above live off post (unless there were special circumstances-you know, like you had 8 kids or something), so we're on post. They recently changed the rule and now anyone E-7 and above (including ALL officers) can live off post BUT you have to move yourself. James Bond won't go for it. Boo!
I can't wait to see the inside of your new house. How exciting! And a door with a lock! What a novel concept. We have a door (2 of them in fact) in our bedroom, but both the locks have been painted over so many times they don't work. Nice.

Re: Hooked on phonics obviously didn't work for them.

LOL! James Bond and I have a list of "interesting" names for our imaginary children:

Nosmo King

Beamis

Shithead (Shuh-theeyd)

Thunder just for giggles, I'd spell it Thun'der)

Thor (Th'or?)

Topanga

Noloi Tering

Now we'd NEVER really use these names, but sadly, I think some people might.

Re: Our Mini-Vacation

Isn't it HUGE culture shock going back to America? Indy and I flew back last year and it was like going to Oz. It's so weird to be able to read all the signs, understand the language and have stores open all the time! Craziness! James Bond and I laugh at little "islands" in parking lots. You know, the little strips of grass with a tree or bushes on them? We joke that in Germany there would be an apartment complex and a garden platz on the that tiny little island. :)
Oh, how I miss the 2 story B&N! When we lived in IL, there was one 2 blocks from our apartment. I was there almost daily. It was my second home (and where James Bond said half our paychecks went).
I've only been to Baltimore once and it was just for the day, but I think I might add it to my list of places I'd like to visit in the US. It sounds great!

Re: No Longer in Deutschland!

I've been wondering about you guys! The last time we lived in Germany we got orders that had us PCSing in 2 weeks. Oh, how we laughed. We've lived in Germany on and off for a total of 8 years now. They just keep sending us back, so we're going to see if they'll just let us stay put. All this back and forth is really a lot of work. We'd be more than happy to move to England. Dh is Army, but he can go to RAF Molesworth, which is 60 miles from London. Oh, how I adore England. Best of luck with your PCS! I look forward to reading about all the "adventures." ;)
