Great story, but....

Somehow, I feel like you are equating privilege with something as minuscule, although equally important if not more, as respect. This post sounds more in the direction of etiquette and cultural mannerisms than privilege. Then again, I am as cynical as they come. With due respect for your warm openness and your anthropology degree, I disagree with you completely. You are a sensei, and with that comes cultural and mutual respect, especially in the eyes of a typical Japanese. You could be an Inuit wearing sea lion and they would still bow to you if you were their sensei. It has absolutely nothing to do with privilege or skin color, not even in the academic sense.

I don't want to get into a white privilege debate so I'll cut it short. I'm not gonna pull the I've Lived There Card on you, but white privilege is extremely apparent in Japan and throughout Asia. Excuse me if I sounded like a jerk, but I really did enjoy the story a lot.

I actually strongly disagree with that theory. This assumption is that the only people that will watch an Asian American film are Asian Americans. Somehow we left out the rest of Asia and the Asian Diaspora communities around the world. Film does not have to be seen in a theater anymore, rather it's readily accessible via iTunes and other means. The reason some African American filmmakers found success was from the majority, White Americans specifically. The bottom line should be if it's a great movie. People will pay to see something new and thought-provoking -- something utterly different to the garbage we are used to seeing in Hollywood. With the right buzz and rave reviews, I think plenty of AA indie filmmakers are perfectly capable to succeeding, even if the odds are stacked against them.

Preach on, my brother. I guess some people think spoofs, parodies, satire, and everything in between is acceptable as long as it doesn't offend Latino's and Black's. I guess because Asians have become so "successful", they get left out of the equation. If your movie offends people, especially a large subset of the American landscape -- specifically Asian Americans, then they should have the right to protest it. No one is stopping anyone from watching this movie, but we -- AA folks -- already have seen the same shtick one too many time. Good lookin'out, Slanty.

That's what I really hate about these Hollywood discussions. They pull out numbers and expect that it will finally shut our big mouths for whining too much. As you mentioned in your post, John, "With NBC supposedly having 9.7% of its cast members be Asian Americans, are we over-represented?" You can throw in as many weak characters as you want and say you've met the quota, or even exceeded in two-fold, but are there any strong roles that you see any Asian Americans play on the air? I can't seem to find one. Sandra Oh? B.D. Wong? Daniel Dae Kim? Much love to them but how about a giving us a shot on a major sitcom or drama series. If America could produce reality show winners like Dat Phan and the "Jabbawockeez" in prime time, then why can't we be given a shot at a major scripted show with a strong Asian American role? Sorry for "whining" on your thread, John.
