It's actually a lot LESS sophisticated. It's just creating an array of the darkest pixels in the photo, then it randomly chooses two points at a time and draws a curve between them. It's more likely to draw a curve if the points are close together.

If "did it need to work that way" is your guiding web design principle, then you can only hope to produce purely utilitarian products. That methodology certainly has its place, but the internet would be an incredibly boring thing if everyone thought that way.

In the example you cited, that menu didn't *need* to slide down, it didn't *need* to have graphic icons. Design is about making something functional and beautiful. The sliding, the icons and yes, the icon-pop-in work together to that end.

Sorry if your scrollbar got hijacked in the past, but try not to take it out on innocent blog posts about design.
