That methodology certainly has its place, but the internet would be an incredibly boring thing if everyone thought that way.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In the example you cited, that menu didn't *need* to slide down, it didn't *need* to have graphic icons. Design is about making something functional and beautiful.
